EGAT sponsored Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA) with the amount of 16 million baht and announced the 13th EGAT’s King Cup & the 9th EGAT’s Princess Cup of International Weightlifting Championships from May 1-10, 2015 to select new athletes for Thai weightlifting team.

On April 23, 2015 at EGAT head office, Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province, EGAT, TAWA, and Thung Song Municipality of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province jointly announced the 13th EGAT’s King Cup & the 9th EGAT’s Princess Cup of International Weightlifting Championships that would be held from May 1-10, 2015 at the gymnasium of Thung Song Municipality, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Mr. Soonchai Kumnoonsate, EGAT Governor, Mrs. Busaba Yodbangtoey, TAWA President, and Mr. Thanakom Charoenrit, Vice Mayor of Thung Song Municipality, joined the event. EGAT also granted 16 million baht to TAWA as sponsorship.


EGAT Governor said that since 2004 EGAT had supported TAWA for 11 years, complying with Thai Government Policy, to develop the potential of Thai weightlifting athletes. It was seen that TAWA could develop the athlete potential to the world standard as targeted, proven by medals received from the competitions both in Thailand and other countries, especially from Olympic Games. Since Athens Games 2004, Beijing Games 2008, until London Games 2012, Thai weightlifting squad could continuously gain the medals, bringing the prestige, happiness, and pride to the country. Moreover, in 2014, Thai athletes received approximately 100 medals from Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships, World Youth Weightlifting Championships, Youth Olympic Games, Asian Games, and World University Championships. Thailand was also selected to host World Youth Weightlifting Championships 2017 which was the selection round of Youth Olympic Games held in 2018 in Argentina.


EGAT Governor further said that in 2015 EGAT sponsored EGAT’s King Cup and Princess Cup of International Weightlifting Championships held in 3 categories: general public, junior, and youth, to develop the potential of Thai weightlifting athletes. There would be the athletes from several countries to join the competition. All Thai people would be welcomed to encourage Thai athletes and support their competence development to the international standard.

The President of TAWA said that the success of Thai weightlifting athletes from many competitions both in Asia and International Championships, as well as Olympic Games was because of the EGAT continuous support. TAWA was thankful and would continue developing the Thai weightlifting team and get prepared for Olympic Games 2016 held in Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil.

WATA received the support from Thung Song Municipality to use gymnasium to organize the competition. All facilities would be ready to serve Thai and foreign athletes as well as all audiences.

Besides, the visitors who would come to watch the competition could also visit many tourist attractions in Nakhon Si Thammarat that reflected its ancient culture and civilization such as Wat Phra Mahathat, an auspicious place that Thai people respected.

“There will be 651 athletes and staff joining the event, 566 of them are Thai athletes and staff, while 85 are athletes and staff from Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and South Korea, categorized to youth 32 teams, and general public 25 teams. I would like to invite all Thai people to cheer our athletes, to bring the prestige to our country,” said the President of TAWA.
