EGAT organized the official opening ceremony of North Bangkok Power Plant Block 2. The power plant which is located in the middle of the city is equipped with modern technology to prevent impact on environment and communities. It enhances the security of power system with its capability to use natural gas from 2 sources and its potential to use LNG in the future.

On June 1, 2016, Mr. Soonchai Kumnoonsate, EGAT Governor, chaired the opening ceremony of North Bangkok Power Plant Block 2. Mr. Nisit Chansomwong, the Governor of Nonthaburi Province, Mr. Joe Mastrangelo, President & CEO of GE Power Gas Power Systems, Mr. Yuji Watanabe, General Manager Power Plant EPC Dept. No.1, Sumitomo Corporation, contractors, EGAT executives, community leaders, and local people also joined the ceremony.

EGAT Governor said that North Bangkok Power Plant Block 2 was one of power projects under Power Development Plan 2010 which was approved on July 10, 2012 by the cabinet for EGAT to implement in order to cope with the growing demand that was higher than expectation. Its construction started in January 2013, while its commercial operation date began on January 15, 2016.

The site of 850-MW North Bangkok Power Plant covers an area of 60 rai next to EGAT Head Quarters and North Bangkok Power Plant Block 1 in Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province. It is a singled shaft combined cycle power plant which depends on the cooperative work of gas turbine, steam turbine, and generator. It uses natural gas supplied from 2 sources namely Myanmar (western side) and the Gulf of Thailand (eastern side) and will use LNG in the future. Its combustion system is efficient, which can reduce fuel use, nitrogen oxide, and emission from combustion process better than regulated standard.

“North Bangkok Power Plant Block 2 uses the latest technology. It can use the natural gas from both of Myanmar gas field and the Gulf of Thailand, which is beneficial for fuel management when there is gas supply cut from one or the other source. It also helps reducing the loss in the transmission system as the power plant is located in the area with high demand. Apart from its potential to provide sufficient power, the power plant is also concerned about environment and community care. The North Bangkok Power Plant is comprised of 2 blocks: the first block with the capacity of 700 MW and the second block with 850 MW. It is the power plant located amid the city to meet the demand for power with reliability,” said EGAT Governor.
