         EGAT Mae Moh Mine won the Excellent Award at the EIA Monitoring Awards 2018 for the second year guaranteeing its operation in accordance with the measures to prevent and mitigate environmental impacts which include mine rehabilitation and social responsibility. EGAT will continue to implement the projects and aim for the Outstanding Award in the future.

         On December 21, 2018, Mr. Prajuab Doncommul, EGAT’s Director of Mae Moh Mine Planning and Management Division revealed that the Mae Moh Mine Project won the Excellent Award at the EIA Monitoring Awards 2018 from projects that strictly comply with the measures of the 2018 environmental impact assessment report. General Surasak Kanchanarat, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment chaired the awarding ceremony at Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort.

         The Director of Mae Moh Mine Planning and Management Division said that the EIA Monitoring Awards 2018 held by the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, is to persuade establishments to implement measures to prevent and mitigate environmental impacts, measures to monitor environmental impacts, and to report the results of the measures to better the environmental management. The projects from establishments that meet the criteria and comply with the measures in the environmental impact assessment report will be chosen to win the award. This year there were 38 projects chosen; 12 projects received the Outstanding Award, 18 projects received the Excellent Award, and 8 projects received the Honorable Mention Award. EGAT’s Mae Moh Mine received the Excellent Award.

         The Mae Moh Mine Project implemented measures to prevent and mitigate environmental impacts along with doing research and using new technology to control the environmental impact more efficiently. Mae Moh Mine is an open pit mine which transfers coal to the stockpile and further to Mae Moh Power Plant for electricity generation. In each process of mining, EGAT strictly complies with the measures to prevent and mitigate environmental impacts, measures to monitor environmental impacts, including using the International Organization for Standardization on environmental management system, ISO14001; Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, OHSAS 18001; and the Standard for Corporate Social Responsibility for Department of Primary Industries and Mines, CSR-DPIM, in order to raise the operation standard. The Mae Moh Mine Project won the Excellent Award at the EIA Monitoring Awards 2018 for the second consecutive year. In the future, EGAT Mae Moh will continue the mining standards to aim for the Outstanding Award which requires a total score that passes the requirement and must previously won the Excellent Award no less than 3 times.

         “EGAT Mae Moh encourages the community participation in inspecting the quality of the environment and the compliance of measures to prevent and mitigate environmental impacts, which include mine rehabilitation and social responsibility, in order to build confidence and trust. Moreover, EGAT established the ‘Mine Rehabilitation Fund’ to restore the area, e.g. building the Mae Moh Mine Museum to be a learning center on lignite for citizens, improving the quality of life in Mae Moh District by supporting local culture and traditions, health care, education, occupations, as well as creating a botanical garden, sightseeing pavilion, golf course, Mexican sunflowers field, and the recreational park to commemorate the 84th Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej to be a relaxing tourist attraction for the community. EGAT holds the yearly Mae Moh Festival to welcome visitors to see EGAT Mae Moh, one of the beautiful attractions of Lampang Province,” said EGAT’s Director of Mae Moh Mine Planning and Management Division.
