EGAT and Laos sign a power purchase agreement for the Nam Theun 1 Hydropower Plant Project

EGAT and Laos signed a power purchase agreement for the Nam Theun 1 Hydropower Plant Project to cooperate in increasing power capacity in Laos and to strengthen the electricity system of the two countries.
On September 23, 2017, Mr. Kornrasit Pakchotanon, EGAT Governor signed a power purchase agreement for the Nam Theun 1 Hydropower Plant Project with Mr. Phonesack Vilaysack, Chairman of Nam Theun 1 Power Company Limited (NT1PC). Dr. Sonchai Siphandon, Deputy Prime Minister of Laos, Dr. Suphan Kaewmeechai, Minister of Planning and Investment, Dr. Khammany Inthirath, Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Sommad Pholsena, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, and honored guests from related government sectors of Laos bore witness at the Lao Plaza Hotel in Vientiane, Laos.
The Nam Theun 1 Hydropower Plant Project, located in Bolikhamxay province in Central Laos has an installed capacity of 514.3 MW and distributes electricity of 1,953 million units per year through 500 kV transmission lines from the power plant to the Nabong substation in Laos, then to the Udonthani 3 substation in Thailand. The agreement period is 27 years starting from the commercial operation date. It is another power purchase project the Laos government proposed to Thailand under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU was signed by the Thai and Lao governments in order to support and cooperate in increasing power capacity in Laos to sell to Thailand. NT1PC whose shareholders include Phonesack Group Company Limited 60 percent, Electricity Generating Public Company Limited 25 percent, and EDL-Generation Public Company 15 percent will be developing the projects.
At the moment, there are 5 private power plant projects in Laos supplying commercial electricity to EGAT, which are Theun-Hinboun, Houay Ho, Nam Theun 2, Nam Ngum 2, and Hongsa Lignite. Moreover, there are other 3 projects that have signed a contract with EGAT and are being constructed, which are Xayaburi, Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy, and Nam Ngiep 1 that are scheduled for commercial operation in 2019. EGAT's total purchased capacity (including electricity purchased from the Nam Theun 1 Hydropower Plant Project, which is scheduled for commercial operation in 2022) is 5,934.9 MW.
