          The ministry of Energy, Pollution Control Department, GITSDA, Chulalongkorn University, and EGAT declare their intention of improving air quality for Thai people to have pure air to breathe in.

          On March 4, 2021 Mr. Supattanapong Punmeechaow, Deputy Prime Minister and the Energy Minister presided over declaration of intent ceremony for energy management, air quality improvement, and environmental care. The event was also joined by Prof Dr. Thanawat Jarupongsakul, Chairman of the National Strategic Plan Committee on Eco-Friendly Development and Growth; Mr. Atthapol Charoenchansa, Director General of Pollution Control Department; Dr. Pakorn Apaphant, Executive Director of Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization): GISTDA; Prof. Dr. Supot Teachavorasinskun, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University; Prof. Dr. Pisut Painmanakul, Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University; and Mr. Boonyanit Wongrukmit, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) at Auditorium, 50-year Building, EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.

          On this occasion, the Energy Minister delivered the keynote speech on “Energy and Air, Opportunity for Sustainable Life” with the key message that energy is a factor which drives and develops economy, resulting to a good quality of life of the people. The Energy Minister and EGAT do not only give an importance on energy security but also happiness of Thai people. Once Thai people have joined in conserving the energy through Label No. 5 – energy saving project. Presently, he would like to invite all Thais to join in generating pure air.


          The EGAT Governor said that from the past until today, EGAT has attempted to create the power of happiness by maintaining the power system security which is a key to drive national economy, developing power generation technology which is environmentally friendly without an impact on air quality, supporting efficiency use of electrical appliances through Label No. 5 – energy saving project and Green Classroom Project, and taking care of environment thought reforestation project. These projects will be further developed to achieve more tangible results by the cooperation of the network under the concept of EGAT Air Time which is comprised of:


          T (Tree): increasing the green area to absorb pollution, purifying air through reforestation project, check dam building, forest fire prevention volunteering, and slash-and-burn preventive measures


          I (Innovation): developing air quality control innovation, promoting technology of electricity generation from renewable energy such as floating solar project and electric vehicles

          M (Monitoring): installing air quality monitoring tools around EGAT sites and Green Classroom Project network, showing the data through applications to acknowledge the public and raise awareness, bringing about behavior change


          E (Education & Engagement): disseminate knowledge and promoting attitude on energy management and air quality through activities of green classroom project and EGAT learning centers

          In 2021, EGAT will install dust monitoring censors at 200 points around EGAT power plants, dams, and transmission lines, and schools under EGAT Green Classroom Project and Office of the Vocational Education Commission.


          The Director General of Pollution Control Department said that this cooperation will integrate database system development to build mathematic model to forecast air pollution, a tool to monitor air pollutant situation, and send air pollution warning to the public.

          The Executive Director of GISTDA said that the cooperation is a challenge that each agency will join in getting rid of weakness and promote strength. The public will realize the air quality situation and get prepared to deal with it effectively.

          The Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University said that the agency will join in developing a model to analyze and forecast PM2.5 particles. The data will be applied together with satellite data, geoinformatics technology, and machine learning. The information will be shown on the website and application to report air quality index. Moreover, when one accesses the areas with air quality index above the standard level, the alert will be sent automatically.
