On July 31, 2014 Mr. Soonchai Kumnoonsate, EGAT Governor, chaired the commercial operation ceremony of Chana Power Plant Block 2. The project was under Thailand Power Development Plan 2007 (Revision 2) which was approved by the Cabinet on February 22, 2011 and aimed to answer the rising demand for electricity because of the economic and industrial growth as well as strengthening the power system security in the Southern Thailand.

Chana Combined Cycle Power Plant Block 2 with the installed capacity of 800 MW is an expansion project. When it is added to the existing Chana Power Plant Block 1 whose installed capacity is 731 MW, the total capacity has increased to 1,531 MW. The added capacity will enhance the energy security in Thailand, especially meeting the demand in the southern provinces that rises 6 percent annually. The power plant uses the natural gas from JDA source as fuel with the highest demand of 148 million cubic feet per day.

As the latest natural gas supply cut from JDA source had a huge impact on the energy security in the Southern Thailand and after Chana Power Plant Block 1 was completely improved to use diesel oil as the reserve fuel, EGAT planned to improve Chana Power Plant Block 2 to be able to use diesel oil as well. The diesel storage tank was now being built, while the fuel nozzle had been being improved to suit both of natural gas and diesel oil. The improvement will be completed by the beginning of 2015.

Moreover, EGAT has implemented CSR activities with the participation from the community to found “Blue Crab Bank”, in order to preserve marine animals and restore the abundance of Na Thap Canal. EGAT also cooperates with the community to mitigate the flood in the area around the power plant and provide support on education, religion, culture, health, and life quality of the community.

“EGAT is proud to play a part in developing the Southern Thailand, especially in strengthening the power system security together with keeping the relationship with the communities as the good neighbor”, said the Governor.
