Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), and Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) ask for public cooperation to refrain from releasing sky lanterns near power poles, transmission lines, and substations during Loy Krathong festival to prevent damage to life and property due to power system failures.

Mr. Kitti Petchsanthad, EGAT Deputy Governor - Transmission System, said that floating a sky lantern becomes a common tradition during Loy Krathong festival, based on a local belief. However, the sky lantern lit or released near power poles, transmission lines, or substations may fall on the power facilities. This problem can cause a power outage, voltage drop, or even a sudden widespread blackout, affecting electricity users.

“As the national power utilities, EGAT, MEA, and PEA would like to ask people not to light or release sky lanterns or any kinds of fireworks near power poles, transmission lines, and substations to prevent loss to life and property and ensure the power system security. For more information or in case of emergency relating to transmission lines and substations, please contact EGAT Call Center (1416), MEA Call Center (1130), and PEA Contact Center (1129) around the clock.
