TAWA joins forces with Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phuket, EGAT, and allies to organize competitions, scouting for national team athletes for Olympic Qualifier

TAWA, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phuket, EGAT, and allies held a press conference for the 2024 EGAT Thailand Weightlifting Championships and the 2024 IWF World Cup, scouting for national team athletes.

On March 7, 2024, Mr. Norasak Suksomboon, Vice Governor of Phuket Province; Mr. Sritham Ratchakaew, Vice Governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province; Gen. Wisut Dechsakul, General Secretary of the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA); Mr. Chaiwut Lakmuang, Assistant Governor – Sustainability Management of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT); and Air Marshal Wattanachai Charoenrat, TAWA Technical Committee and Chairman, attended the press conference for the 2024 EGAT King and Princess’s Cup Thailand Weightlifting Championships and the 2024 IWF World Cup, at the Auditorium, EGAT Headquarters, Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province.

Gen. Wisut Dechsakul, TAWA General Secretary, said that the Championships aim to increase the athlete’s potential and scout for new national team athletes under the collaboration with various sectors including Sports Authority of Thailand, National Sports Development Fund, private companies, EGAT providing the budget for organizing the competitions, and Phuket and Nakhon Si Thammarat Provinces being the hosts.

Mr. Sritham Ratchakaew, Vice Governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, said that as the host of the 2024 EGAT Thailand Weightlifting Championships, held on April 20-30, 2024, at the Gymnasium of Thung Song Town Municipality, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, the Thung Song Town Municipality is ready with venues, accommodations, and facilities to support the athletes. Also, the six-year expertise in hosting weightlifting competitions will ensure the smooth event organization.

Mr. Norasak Suksomboon, Vice Governor of Phuket Province, revealed that Phuket Province is pleased to be the host of the 2024 IWF World Cup, held on March 31 – April 11, 2024, at Phuket Rajabhat University. It is a qualification event for Paris Olympic 2024. The province has already prepared facilities to welcome athletes and staff. Being the host for this event will contribute to driving Phuket to become a sports city, promoting the tourism, and boosting the local economy.

Mr. Chaiwut Lakmuang, EGAT Assistant Governor – Sustainability Management, said that EGAT has placed importance on the sport development for the youth. EGAT has been supporting the TAWA since 2004. EGAT will sponsor live broadcasts and prizes for athletes who earn medals at the 2024 Olympic to encourage Thai weightlifters on both the international and global stages. Lately, Thai weightlifters have won a gold medal, four silver medals, and three bronze medals from 2023 IWF Grand Prix II, bringing pride and joy to the Thais.

Air Marshal Wattanachai Charoenrat, TAWA Technical Committee and Chairman, added that 65 teams from member countries with over 500 weightlifters will join in this Championships, held during April 20-25, 2024 for the youth and April 26-30, 2024 for the general public. The weightlifting club with the highest scores from both male and female teams at each level will receive the royal trophy and weightlifting equipment.
