EGAT supports EV Hackathon in celebration of 160-year Thailand-Germany diplomatic relations and drives Thailand to become EV production base of Asia
6 June 2022EGAT supported the Future EV Mobility Creative Contest for Sustainability Project, or EV Hackathon, in celebration of the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Germany and shared knowledge on electric vehicles to the youth in order to drive Thailand to become the EV production base of Asia.

Mr. Suttipong Chalermkiat, Assistant Governor – Sustainability Management of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) represented EGAT at the press conference for the project ‘EV Hackathon: Future EV Mobility Creative Contest for Sustainability #EV4Sustain’ along with Mr. Asi Mamanee, Director-General of Department of European Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; H.E. Georg Schmidt, Ambassador of Germany to Thailand; Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Suchart Siengchin, President of King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB); and network partners in order to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Germany on June 2, 2022, at the press conference room, Department of Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Suttipong Chalermkiat revealed that EGAT, as an organization responsible for the country’s energy security, supports the use of EVs and takes part in creating the EV ecosystem. Moreover, EGAT has joined hands with partners, both in government and private sectors in Thailand and abroad to develop Thailand’s EV industry to improve the people’s quality of life with innovations and create good air quality for all Thais sustainably.
“The EV Hackathon is another important platform that will spark creativity and provide the youth opportunities to learn about EV technologies. EGAT supports knowledge sharing through EGAT’s eight learning centers on electric energy located in every region of Thailand. The centers are ready to welcome everyone who wishes to study and improve themselves to help develop the EV industry and the country continuously,” added Mr. Suttipong.

The goal of this project on electric vehicles is for students to be able to apply the knowledge acquired from the project in the future. Thailand will also benefit from learning about modern technologies of Germany in preparation of becoming the ‘EV production base of Asia’ under the government’s 30/30 policy, which is to manufacture Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) at least 30 percent of total production by 2030. Furthermore, the competition is in line with the economic and environmental policy of both countries, namely Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy and Germany’s Energy Transition and Climate Change.
The EV Hackathon held from June – August 2022 is open for students between 18-35 years old to participate in online workshops and submit their presentation as teams of three students. The eight selected teams will compete in the final round of 24-hour EV Hackathon at KMUTNB during August 27-28, 2022 to win a total cash prize of 250,000 Baht.
