EGAT supports SolarPlus with Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading to connect energy trading among prosumers for the first time in Thailand

16 August 2022

EGAT supported the SolarPlus Project by introducing an energy management innovation, Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Platform, a platform that connects direct electricity trading between producers and consumers who have installed solar rooftops for the first time in Thailand. It is a collaboration with four other allies and aims to develop clean energy usage in the household sector in order to move towards carbon neutrality.

Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, Deputy Governor – Strategy and Spokesperson of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) revealed that EGAT joined the launching of the SolarPlus Project to install solar rooftops for the public in order to generate and trade electricity for the first time in Thailand, which also promotes the use of clean energy. EGAT introduced the Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Platform developed by EGAT to be a platform for direct electricity trading between producers and consumers under the pilot project at Supalai Garden Ville Rangsit – Klong 2 in Pathum Thani Province. The goal is to install solar rooftops at 500,000 households nationwide within five years. The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.3 million tCO2e per year. This project is a collaboration between EGAT and four other allies, namely KASIKORNBANK; PEA ENCOM Smart Solution Co., Ltd.; Supalai Public Company Limited; and INNOPOWER Company Limited. The press conference for the launching of the project was held on August 15, 2022 at KLOUD by KBank Building, Siam Square Soi 7, Bangkok.

In addition to its main mission of electricity generation and transmission, EGAT aims to develop new energy innovation solutions to meet the needs of energy users in the digital era. The Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Platform developed by EGAT is a platform for direct electricity trading between producers and consumers who have installed solar rooftops under the SolarPlus Project in order to manage energy efficiently and become a green energy trading hub, a model of the Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Project in the future. Moreover, EGAT is developing electricity generation from clean energy to achieve EGAT Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Thailand Net Zero Emissions by 2065, as well as to become a provider of complete energy solutions.

EGAT’s Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Platform is a platform for prosumers, or those who can generate electricity from clean energy, in order to directly trade electricity that exceeds the demand between each other (Peer-to-Peer). The platform has been tested on the ERC Sandbox Project – Phase 1 of the Office of Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). It also supports bilateral trading between electricity producers and consumers. Users can follow up on electricity generation cost and electricity usage in real time via the application, as well as view the history at all times. EGAT is developing the platform to be more user-friendly and widespread and will start expanding it to commercial use to meet consumer needs.
