EGAT showcases energy innovations and technologies driving Thailand to achieve Net Zero in SETA 2022, SOLAR+STORAGE ASIA 2022, and Enlit Asia 2022
21 September 2022EGAT has supported the international conference and exhibition to drive Thailand to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emissions by 2065, by exhibiting energy innovations and technologies, i.e., hydro-floating solar hybrid, carbon capture, hydrogen, and electric vehicles in SETA 2022, SOLAR+STORAGE ASIA 2022, and Enlit Asia 2022 held during September 20-22, 2022 at Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC).

On September 20, 2022 Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), as a representative of EGAT, attended the opening ceremony of SETA 2022, SOLAR+STORAGE ASIA 2022, and Enlit Asia 2022 at BITEC. The delegates joining the event are from electricity and energy businesses both in government and private sectors totaling 200 organizations around the world. They have jointly showcased energy technologies and products and attended the conference of Asian energy leaders under the concept “Sustainable Energy Development to Achieve Net Zero Emissions.” Moreover, energy storage innovations to enable 24/7 electricity generation have been introduced, while panel discussions on energy have been held for the whole three days during September 20-22, 2022.
Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano said that EGAT has supported the event with an aim to drive Thailand toward Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emissions by 2065, by publicizing research and innovations on energy technologies paving the way for deployment of clean energy innovations, and conducting studies on power generation technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and mitigate the impact on climate change with various projects. For example, Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid, a combination of solar power and hydropower, is controlled by Energy Management System or EMS and Weather Forecast System, initially piloted at Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani Province, with a generating capacity of 45 MW. It is also regarded as the world’s largest hybrid solar power plant. EGAT has continued the development of this hybrid project at Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen Province with a generating capacity of 24 MW coupled with a battery storage to increase stability of renewable energy generation. Besides, EGAT is conducting the study of carbon capture for capturing carbon dioxide in flue gas from power plants. The pilot project starts at Nam Phong Power Plant in Khon Kaen Province and Mae Moh Power Plant in Lampang Province. EGAT is also studying the possibility of applying captured CO2 for commercial use in the future.
Moreover, EGAT has studied the possibility of combining hydrogen and natural gas to be used as blended fuel for gas turbine power plants in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, as well as the possibility of producing green hydrogen to generate electricity utilizing fuel cells, which does not release greenhouse gas. EGAT has also developed and supported technology that expedites the growth of EV business to reduce carbon dioxide in the transportation sector, such as opening EleX by EGAT charging stations which EGAT co-invested and collaborated with several partners. Currently, EGAT has over 70 stations and is aiming for over 100 stations by the end of 2022, while a digital platform or application called “EleXA” has been developed to locate stations as well as charge and pay for services. Last but not least, EGAT has conducted the study to properly manage the increasing battery waste from EVs by studying the repurposing and recycling of the batteries.
In this event, there will be an awarding ceremony of Executive Energy Award in which EGAT has won two awards, namely Outstanding Organization for Thailand’s Carbon Neutrality Mobilization and Renewable Energy & Sustainability. Moreover, EGAT will participate in the panel discussions with ASEAN energy leaders on current energy topics such as CEO Energy Forum “ASEAN Leaders’ Panel: Net Zero: Establishing a Realistic ASEAN Roadmap,” Clean Energy Revolution “EGAT Insights: Hydro-Floating Solar Project Development in Thailand & Lessons for ASEAN,” SMR Technology for Carbon Neutrality, Security and Sustainable Energy of Thailand,” and Role and Policy Implementation to Achieve Carbon Neutrality of Thailand. All of them aim to drive Thailand and the world to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emissions by 2065 sustainably.
