EGAT and MHI to study CCUS and green technologies, moving toward Carbon Neutrality by 2050

25 November 2022

EGAT and MHI signed an MOU to study and exchange information on clean energy development to reduce GHG emissions, driving Thailand toward Carbon Neutrality by 2050.

On November 22, 2022, Mr. Thidade Eiamsai, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and Mr. Ryo Takubo, President and Managing Director of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Thailand) Ltd. (MHI), entered into the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to study and exchange information on clean energy and Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), held at EGAT’s 50th Anniversary Building, EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.

EGAT Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy said that this cooperation between EGAT and MHI will develop knowledge on clean energy technologies, including CCUS, hydrogen, and ammonia fuels for power generation. This cooperation aims at reducing CO2 emissions to achieve the goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2050, applying more clean technologies with power plants in Thailand to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensuring energy security in a sustainable manner.

MHI President and Managing Director said that MHI Group has supported the energy development of Thailand for over five decades. It is ready to support the study of gas turbine technology, using hydrogen, ammonia, and CCUS, a potential solution in pollution reduction, to learn and exchange in-depth experiences with EGAT, jointly seek business opportunities, and drive carbon reduction in Thailand.

EGAT and MHI Group has a longstanding collaboration since the construction of Sirikit Dam in 1968, contributing to significant projects across the country, including South Bangkok Power Plant, Nam Phong Power Plant, and Wang Noi Power Plant. In 2009, MHI Group and EGAT Group established EGAT Diamond Service (EDS) to deliver gas turbine services for both domestic and international customers. Under EGAT – MHI cooperation, this 3-year MOU aims to support the national goals of reducing 40% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net-zero Emissions by 2065.
