EGAT promotes good environment alongside electricity generation for a better life and encourages young generation to combat global warming
11 June 2024EGAT invites Thais to join in creating good environment for a better life on World Environment Day while committing to the mission of electricity generation with environmental care for biodiversity and instilling environmental awareness in the young generation.

Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), stated on EGAT Environment Day which was organized under the concept “Diversity for Life” from June 4-7, 2024 at EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province that environmental issues are becoming more severe. These include climate change, loss of biodiversity, and waste management problems which are interconnected and have impact on humans both directly and indirectly; however, technologies and knowledge will help humans survive. For 55 years, EGAT has committed to maintaining energy security coupled with preserving the environment and biodiversity. For example, EGAT has developed power generation processes, grid systems, and support systems throughout the value chain, aiming to use resources efficiently, increase the share of renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste generation, and enhance waste recycling to achieve zero waste. EGAT is also providing energy and electric vehicle solutions, continuously implementing pilot projects of circular economy. Moreover, EGAT is accelerating the development of 16 hydro-floating solar hybrid projects with a total capacity of 2,725 megawatts. Currently, such projects at Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani Province and Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen Province have been commercially operating. Additionally, EGAT is studying hydrogen technology, elevating its operations toward sustainability through innovation, supporting employees to understand and value the circular economy, collaborating with both internal and external agencies to conduct environmental conservation activities, such as the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the conservation of parakeets in Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province, and the survey of seagrass and dugongs in Krabi Province.

EGAT has been organizing the Environment Day’s events annually since 2005, and for over 20 years, EGAT has been committed to the development of both its operations and personnel in order to preserve a good environment as long as possible. For the 2024 Environment Day, EGAT presented an educational exhibition divided into three sections: Atmosphere, which provided information on climate change and air quality; Biosphere, which presented data on biodiversity, tree planting, and green spaces; and Human, which showcased activities related to the circular economy and innovations created by EGAT to monitor environmental impacts, such as an air quality monitoring system. Additionally, the event featured an eco-friendly market, environmental workshops, prize-winning activities, and a speech contest titled “Who Are We…in the Environment.”
