DEDE and EGAT to set national Energy Efficiency Label standard

27 March 2025

DEDE and EGAT have signed a cooperation agreement to study Energy Efficiency Label integration for machinery, high-efficiency equipment, and energy-saving materials. The newly developed label will have a single design and standard for nationwide adoption. This initiative aims to raise the standard of national energy management to an international level.

On March 24, 2025, Ms. Nanthika Thangsupanich, Director-General of Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) and Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, Governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), entered into the cooperation agreement regarding the study on integration of energy efficiency labeling measures for machinery, high-efficiency equipment, and energy-saving materials to develop the new single-standard Energy Efficiency Label for nationwide adoption, at EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.

Ms. Nanthika Thangsupanich, DEDE Director–General, revealed that due to the ongoing rapidly changing energy situation, energy efficiency improvement is a vital mission of governmental agencies and all sectors. The implementation of energy efficiency labeling measures is a mechanism to stimulate the use of high-efficiency equipment, materials, and machinery, leading to reducing the country’s overall energy consumption and raising awareness among consumers and the industrial sector.

Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, EGAT Governor, revealed that EGAT has been committed to ensuring national power security while promoting energy efficiency through the Energy-saving Label No.5 Project for 30 years with current 26 label-affixed products. Meanwhile, DEDE has been carrying out the Energy Efficiency Label project with 19 products. These two main standards become mechanisms that enhance the consumer’s decision of choosing high-efficiency machinery, equipment, and materials in the residential, industrial, business, and transportation sectors, contributing to a concrete energy saving of 4,540 ktoe (kiloton of oil equivalent) and a total carbon emission reduction of 27 million tons. The signed cooperation agreement is a mutual commitment of both organizations to promote efficient energy consumption. EGAT and DEDE will study the integration of the Energy-saving Label No.5 and the Energy Efficiency Label to develop a single design and standard. This collaboration aims at decreasing the confusion of consumers and elevating the standard, data management, and evaluation in response to Thailand’s Sustainable Development Goal, energy conservation plans, and greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The study will support regulatory bodies to set accurate and systematic measures that can motivate entrepreneurs to develop technologies and encourage consumers to choose products with higher efficiency.

In addition, EGAT and DEDE will develop the national Energy Efficiency Label under the three main concepts which are 1. Optimization for a concrete result of cost reduction, 2. Data management and reporting according to international standards to enable accurate, precise, and verifiable certification and monitoring process by developing data center system and setting standardized assessment process that help increase reliability and align with international sustainable development guidelines, and 3. Engagement from all sectors, including regulatory bodies, industrial entrepreneurs, the business sector, and the public, for suitable development. These concepts are to ensure that the newly developed label will meet the needs of all sectors and can be effectively applied.
