ASEAN’s vision of SMR as future energy: Thailand accelerates infrastructure readiness to support Net Zero goals
24 December 2025ASEAN energy companies at the ANBP forum identified SMR as the future energy, addressing both energy security and sustainability. Meanwhile, EGAT shared its vision of SMR development in Thailand, focusing on preparing infrastructure under IAEA framework to support Net Zero goals and enhance competitiveness on the global stage.

Mr. Siriwat Chedsi, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), attended the 10th Asia Nuclear Business Platform (ANBP) held in Jakarta, Indonesia from December 9 to 11, 2025. On this occasion, he served as a speaker on the topic “Thailand’s Preparations for Nuclear Power.”

The ANBP forum aimed to provide a platform for sharing visions of nuclear energy in ASEAN and discussing nuclear energy projects in the future. Representatives from ASEAN energy companies view nuclear energy as a key source for clean energy transition because of its stability and reliability, and it can generate electricity continuously without CO2 emissions. By 2050, Thailand targets an SMR capacity of 600 MW, while Indonesia aims for 500 MW. Moreover, Vietnam plans to reach a total capacity of 12,000 MW from both conventional nuclear power plants and SMRs, while the Philippines sets its target at 4,800 MW.

Mr. Siriwat Chedsi, EGAT Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy, said that Thailand is planning to integrate SMR projects with a total capacity of 600 MW in the Power Development Plan (PDP2024), to support 2050 Net Zero goals and enhance Thailand’s global competitiveness. As the primary agency responsible for Thailand’s power system, EGAT is preparing for the development of SMR projects in every dimension under the framework of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which covers the 19 infrastructure issues. They include establishment of steering committees, coordination with regulators and stakeholders, public engagement, feasibility studies, human resource development, and international collaboration, to ensure Thailand’s readiness for SMR project implementation. EGAT will adhere to IAEA’s 3S principle comprising of safety, security, and safeguards, to guarantee transparency and safety in every stage of development.
