Energy Minister inspects Chana Power Plant maintenance, to be fully restored to 1,476 MW this April

26 February 2026

On February 25, 2026, Mr. Auttapol Rerkpiboon, Minister of Energy, along with ministry executives, visited Chana Power Plant in Chana District, Songkhla Province, to inspect its maintenance progress following the floods in November 2025. The delegation was welcomed by Mr. Suttipong Chalermkiat, Assistant Governor – Generation 1 of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), alongside EGAT executives and employees.

Mr. Suttipong Chalermkiat, EGAT Assistant Governor, said that under EGAT’s restoration plan for Chana Power Plant, Block 1 Unit 1 and Block 2 Unit 1 have been fully restored, supplying 738 MW of electricity to the grid. EGAT is now restoring Block 1 Unit 2 and Block 2 Unit 2, to supply another 738 MW of electricity back to the grid. The power plant is expected to run at its full capacity of 1,476 MW by early April 2026. The power plant has set up a flood mitigation plan by raising the height of flood embankments and using vinyl sheet piles as the barrier to prevent the collapse of the embankments.

After the inspection of Chana Power Plant maintenance, the Energy Minister visited Khlong Ngae Substation, which exchanges electric power between Thailand and Malaysia. This substation converts 230 kV high voltage alternating current (HVAC) into the 300 kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) for connection with the grid of Tenaga Nasional Berhad of Malaysia. Serving as emergency support, it functions as a reserve capacity for two countries. The power purchase between the two countries which started in 2002 originated the power exchange at the regional level under Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS – PIP) with the aim to drive ASEAN Power Grid (APG). Moreover, the project reflects a strategic progression in energy collaboration among Lao PDR, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore and elevates cross-border power purchase through regional energy resource management.

“The Ministry of Energy and EGAT are committed to enhancing Thailand’s long-term energy security and moving toward clean energy transition, with the aim for Net Zero Emissions by 2050,” the Minister concluded.
