EGAT and KHNP accelerate SMRs to foster future energy security and Net Zero goal

6 March 2026

EGAT and KHNP, Republic of Korea, hosted the KHNP-EGAT SMR Technical Seminar, underscoring the readiness to drive SMR development to ensure a secure energy transition and achieve sustainable Carbon Neutrality.

On March 5, 2026, Mr. Siriwat Chedsi, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and Mr. Soonkil Jung, General Manager of the Overseas SMR Project Section, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), presided over the opening of “KHNP–EGAT SMR Technical Seminar.” Held on March 5-6, 2026, at the Grande Centre Point Terminal 21, Bangkok, the seminar was a platform for technical knowledge sharing on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) development between Thai and Korean nuclear experts, including technology overviews, safety concepts, deployment experiences, and international best practices.

Mr. Siriwat Chedsi, EGAT Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy, revealed that amid a global energy landscape where energy security and carbon emission reduction are at the forefront, SMRs become one of the promising options to support Thailand’s clean energy transition, with internationally recognized safety features and the ability to provide reliable low-carbon electricity. The collaboration with KHNP will pave the way for technological advancement as well as the development of institutions and personnel in the energy sector.

Mr. Soonkil Jung, KHNP General Manager of the Overseas SMR Project Section, said that SMR technology will serve as part of Thailand’s efforts to achieve Carbon Neutrality and strengthen energy security. Under the cooperation with EGAT, KHNP stands ready to share technical expertise and operational experience in fostering a clean energy future and looks forward to tangible cooperation in project development and technology exchange in the future.

The KHNP–EGAT SMR Technical Seminar marked the first concrete step following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on nuclear and SMR technologies between EGAT and KHNP in June 2026. This event aimed to enhance comprehensive readiness across all dimensions for accelerating SMR development in Thailand.
