Vajiralongkorn Dam
Background
Vajiralongkorn Dam is a project of the Mae Klong River Basin Development Plan. EGAT has developed the project to generate electricity for the benefit of many aspects such as agriculture and irrigation in the lower Mae Klong River basin. The reservoir above the dam can serve as the aquaculture source of freshwater fish for the fishery. In the rainy season, the dam which can store a large amount of water will help in flood mitigation whereas in the dry season it can discharge water to prevent saltwater intrusion and the pollution of industrial wastewater from factories on both banks of Mae Klong River to maintain the water quality.
The multipurpose Vajiralongkorn Dam, formerly known as “Khao Laem Dam”, was constructed during 1979 -1984. The opening of the dam was performed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn on January 9, 1986. On July 13, 2001, His Majesty King Bhumibol graciously bestowed the name “Vajiralongkorn Dam” after the name of the Crown Prince (Presently King Rama X).
