EGAT bestowed rising star award on low-carbon organization, moving towards national sustainable development goal

22 September 2021

EGAT wins a “rising star” award from Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TGO)’s Low Carbon and Sustainable Business Index (LCSi) 2021, reflecting the success of its operation under continual greenhouse gas management and emissions reduction, in response to the sustainable development goal of the country.

On September 15, 2021, Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy, as EGAT representative, received the rising star award from LCSi 2021 in the virtual award ceremony, presided over by Mr. Kiatchai Maitriwong, Director of Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TOG). The award recognizes the organizations that implement their business operation with continual greenhouse gas reduction and management. It also aims at creating a network of sustainable low-carbon organizations to raise Thai business standards towards sustainable low-carbon goal in the future. The fundamental principle of LCSi is based on the Sufficiency Economy, 3 Dimensions of Sustainability (Economy, Environment, and Society), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on sustainable consumption and production to cope with climate change.

The Director of TOG said that currently, each organization needs to pay more attention to sustainability and low carbon aspect for their business operation. In compliance with the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming to well below 1.5-2 degrees Celsius, every country should take concrete action to solve climate change. The awards granted today will encourage leading organizations to drive their business operations in contribution to the greenhouse gas reduction target of the country.

Mr. Prasertsak revealed that it is the first year that EGAT has joined this project and received the rising star award from LCSi. It keeps us motivated to carry on our operation towards carbon neutrality and to reach the country’s goal of low greenhouse gas emissions. EGAT initial goal is to reduce 20 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent within 2030 by means of using highly efficient technologies, increasing the share of renewable energy to 50% of generation mix, promoting energy efficiency through the Label no.5 project, and implementing the reforestation project of over 500,000 rai to help absorb greenhouse gas.

Furthermore, EGAT has applied the circular economy for its operation and is studying the Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) and other related projects to achieve the goal of low carbon organization, under the concept “EGAT for ALL,” Mr. Prasertsak concluded.
