EGAT bears Ft charge of 36,000 million Baht and adjusts fuel management plan to reduce electricity cost of 14,800 million Baht
28 January 2022To lessen the burden on electric bills for the public, EGAT bears the fuel adjustment charge (Ft) of 36,000 million Baht. It also gears up to adjust the fuel management plan, including postponing the decommission of Mae Moh Coal-Fired Power Plant, Unit 8, for a year and using fuel oil and diesel oil, instead of natural gas, in power plants. All of these make it possible to reduce the electricity cost of 14,800 million Baht.

Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, EGAT Deputy Governor – Strategy and EGAT Spokesperson, revealed that the ongoing global energy crisis of soaring natural gas and LNG prices and the Thai Baht depreciation directly affect the cost of electricity generation. Realizing the impact on the public, EGAT, therefore, adjusts its fuel management plan in accordance with the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC)’s guidance dated January 6, 2022. As a result, the decommission of Mae Moh Power Plant, Unit 8, is on hold for one year, until December 31, 2022. The coal-fired power plant has a generating capacity of 2,160 GWh, equivalent to using LNG of 15,330 million cubic feet, a reduction of power generation cost of 12,200 million Baht.

During November – December 2021, EGAT changed the fuel from natural gas to fuel oil and diesel oil used at Bang Pakong Power Plant and private power plants in the West, to decrease LNG import. The electricity generated from those power plants of 1,235 GWh was equivalent to using LNG of 7,839 million cubic feet, a generation cost reduction of 2,600 Million Baht. EGAT Deputy Governor added that EGAT also temporarily bore the cost of natural gas during September – December 2021 of around 36,000 million Baht.
Besides, other implementations to get through the energy crisis include the generation adjustment of cross-border hydropower plants, additional renewable energy purchase from Small Power Producers (SPP), and setting up the war room to monitor fuel prices.
