EGAT – GIZ promote green cooling technology, moving towards carbon neutrality

17 May 2022

EGAT teams up with GIZ to promote the deployment of green natural refrigerants to reduce the country’s carbon emissions, moving towards carbon neutrality.

On May 12, 2022, Mrs. Sriwan Buranachokepisal, Assistant Governor – Power Plant Planning of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and Chairman of EGAT Cooling Innovation Fund (CIF), and Mr. Reinhold Elges, Country Director of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Thailand and Malaysia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the promotion of green cooling technology under the Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) III Project in Thailand. On this occasion, Ms. Denise Andres, Project Lead of GCI III in Thailand, also joined the signing ceremony, held at EGAT 50th Anniversary Building, EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.

EGAT Assistant Governor – Power Plant Planning said that EGAT and GIZ successfully implemented the project of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (RAC NAMA) in 2021. To further the cooperation in the sustainable cooling sector of Thailand, the CIF and GIZ have agreed to carry out related activities under the GCI III within June 2024. The measures include (1) project development and innovation demonstration, (2) training, (3) knowledge management, and (4) funding. The collaboration aims to promote the use of green cooling technology and enhance the refrigeration and air conditioning sector to play a part in driving Thailand towards the goals of Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero Emissions.

Mr. Reinhold Elges revealed that the GCI III promotes the use of green refrigerants to reduce impacts on climate change from the cooling sector that considerably and increasingly emits greenhouse gas worldwide. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), Germany, and plans to establish Thailand as ASEAN’s knowledge and technology center on green cooling.
