Tourists prepare for a sensational night at ‘Chiang Mai Light Up’

17 May 2022

EGAT joined with allies to organize the ‘Chiang Mai Light Up’ event and invited Thai and foreign tourists to visit the seven religious places at nighttime. The high-efficient lighting system installed at Tha Phae Walking Street is expected to shine a light on the tourist attractions in Chiang Mai Province and welcome tourists after the reopening of the country to restore the local economy from May 27-29, 2022.

On May 14, 2022, Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, Deputy Governor – Strategy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) joined the press conference for the ‘Chiang Mai Light Up’ event to launch the project of increasing the potential of religious tourist attractions (temples) in Chiang Mai Municipality with high-efficient lighting systems and solar energy from May 27-29, 2022. The press conference was joined by Mr. Worrayarn Boonarach, Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai Province, Mrs. Wipawan Woraputipong, Vice President of Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization, Mr. Jiroj Rochanasaowapak, Deputy Mayor of Chiang Mai Municipality, and Mr. Watcharayut Kuawong, Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand – Chiang Mai Office, as well as allies of the project at Khum Kham International Convention Centre Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Province.

Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum said that the project of the installation of high-efficient lighting systems was a cooperation between EGAT and four allies, namely Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organization, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Buddhism, and Chiang Mai Public Relations Department. The aim is to develop religious places, mainly temples, to be cultural tourist attractions at the international level. To be a model for installation of lighting systems in religious places, the attractions must be promoted and restored in terms of economy, society, environment, and culture by supporting efficient energy innovations that are eco-friendly, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and enhance safety for the temples with LED lights during nighttime. The lighting systems include high-efficient LED lights and LED lights used with solar cells installed at seven temples along the Tha Phae Walking Street, i.e. Wat Muen Lan, Wat Phan On, Wat Samphao, Wat Phantao, Wat Chai Phrakiat, Wat Tung Yu, and Wat Si Koet. The installation considered the lighting design and spectrum in order to create new perspectives and dimensions for an even more beautiful photograph during nighttime.

Moreover, there is an energy management system to remotely turn the lights on/off via a mobile application and to monitor usage data. The application displays the on/off status of the lights, electric power, electric current, and electricity charge currently and previously, as well as footage from the CCTV. EGAT will cooperate with allies to monitor and evaluate the impacts of the project to analyze the suitability and value to be considered for future operations.

EGAT joined with four allies, namely Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Chiang Mai Municipality, Thai Hotels Association (Northern Upper), and Thai AirAsia Airline to hold the project’s launching event from May 27-29, 2022, at the Tha Phae Gate called the ‘Chiang Mai Light Up’ event under the concept of ‘Charming Past of the Northern City @ Tha Phae.’ The three-day event will include the project’s launching ceremony, a showing of high-angle pictures of the temple, lights along the Tha Phae Walking Street, mini concerts, the ‘Light Up’ of the seven temples, various free games at the temple fair, and an exhibition of community products. After the event, the seven temples will continue to display the ‘Light Up’ on Sundays and religious holidays.
