EGAT leads the way to sustainability through biodiversity coupled with power generation

24 June 2022

EGAT showcased its implementations for environmental conservation and restoration, including reforestation; mine rehabilitation; clean energy development; and wildlife conservation, to sustainably create biodiversity coupled with energy security.

Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and networks organized International Day of Biological Diversity 2022, over which Mr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich, ONEP Secretary – General, presided on June 17, 2022, at the Auditorium, Tipco 1 Building, Bangkok.

Mr. Presertsak Cherngchawano, EGAT Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy attended the seminar on the topic of Partnership and Green Restoration for Sustainability, for All. He stated that EGAT, as a power producer, has carried out its mission to ensure the country’s power system security, coupled with concern for the environment and biodiversity. Prior to power plant construction, EGAT conducts impact assessment studies and prepares mitigation measures. Among the implementations to restore the environment and biodiversity include the reforestation project of Mae Moh Mine and the Hydro-floating Solar Hybrid Project at Sirindhorn Dam, using water surface of the reservoir to reduce land use and installed with transparent solar panels without impact on the aquatic ecosystem. EGAT also participates in the Plant Genetic Conservation Project Under the Royal Initiative, executed in the areas of 17 dams and power plants nationwide to conserve local plants in its neighboring areas. Besides, fish breeding centers are established in EGAT dams, increasing aquatic species in water sources to maintain biodiversity and generate income for the locals. For a sustainable future, EGAT has implemented the 1-Million-Rai Reforestation project to bring back natural abundance, create wildlife habitats and a source of income for communities, and absorb carbon dioxide of 1.2 million tons per year.

On this occasion, EGAT featured an exhibition on the topic “Alexandrine Parakeet, Biodiversity of Nonthaburi,” showcasing the Alexandrine Parakeet conservation activity by the communities in Bang Kruai District near EGAT Headquarters and North Bangkok Power Plant, to which EGAT has rendered the support.

EGAT would like to encourage the public to take care of the environment for the sustainable future of Thailand and the world.
