EGAT promotes Triple S for climatic sustainability in energy transition period

9 August 2022

EGAT declared the intention to drive its mission towards energy security and EGAT Carbon Neutrality by 2050 with the Triple S Strategy, supporting Thailand to achieve the goal of climatic sustainability.

On August 5, 2022 in Thailand Climate Action Conference (TCAC) held at Royal Paragon Hall, 5th Floor, Siam Paragon, Bangkok; Mr. Boonyanit Wongrukmit, Governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), attended a seminar on the topic of “Powering Thailand for Climate Resilience and Sustainability” with other private and public organizations to drive Thailand towards climatic sustainability.

EGAT Governor revealed that EGAT has developed power generation and transmission with advanced innovations and technologies, coupled with focusing on the balance between power security, society, and environment. It has also supported activities that increase power efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to enhance Thailand to achieve the goals of Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emission by 2065 and become a low-carbon society for a sustainable future of all Thais.

Meanwhile, during the energy transition towards carbon neutrality, EGAT has moved forward to drive the main mission of power system security to supply sufficient energy for all Thais, as well as changing the operation direction in all aspects to be in line with the energy direction of Thailand and the world. The goal is to achieve EGAT Carbon Neutrality by 2050 with the Triple S Strategy as follows:

  1. Sources Transformation is changing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the process of electricity generation and transmission by increasing the proportion of renewable energy in electricity generation, upgrading power plants and the electricity system with modern technology to enhance the flexibility of electricity generation from renewable energy, and using battery energy storage system, such as pumped-storage hydropower plant, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and Hydrogen Energy Storage System (HESS)
  2. Sink Co-creation is to absorb more carbon dioxide by joining hands with partners to reforest an area of 1 million rai by 2031 and planning to deploy Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in EGAT power plants.
  3. Support Measures Mechanism is promoting public participation of greenhouse gas reduction by focusing on power saving, such as No.5 Energy-Saving Label Project; promotion of electric vehicles in which EGAT has developed EV Business Solutions covering EleX by EGAT charging stations, EleXA Application, EGAT Wallbox home chargers, and BackEN management system; Green Classroom Project; promotion of Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy; waste electrical and electronic equipment management; and Khok Nong Na Model.
