Ubol Ratana Dam is a multipurpose dam with the following benefits:
• Irrigation and agriculture: water from electricity generation is discharged into the irrigation system of the agricultural area of more than 300,000 rai in Khon Kaen and Maha Sarakham provinces. It is possible to cultivate twice a year and also in the dry season.
• Fisheries: the reservoir which is a large source of fishery can generate a lot of annual income for the people in the region, upgrading their standard of living.
• Flood mitigation: the construction of the dam has mitigated the problem of flash flood in the rainy season which occurs in the area along Nam Phong River and Chi River.
• Communication: the reservoir serves as a convenient and fast waterway transportation route for the people. Moreover, it is a tourist attraction and recreation place for the public.
