Rajjaprabha Dam
Social & Environmental Management
EGAT cooperated with various government agencies to give assistance to the affected people of 385 households in the area of reservoir construction by fair compensation payment and provision of new land for housing and farming. The new community has complete infrastructure and utilities. Training projects to promote several secondary occupations were organized such as house affairs, tailoring, machinery repair and maintenance, fruit tree planting, etc. In addition, EGAT cooperated with the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAC) to provide the credit project to promote para rubber planting in the project area and allocated a budget to the Department of Cooperative Promotion to carry out the work for agricultural cooperatives.
Irrigation for cultivation
The water released from Rajjaprabha Dam gives benefits to the farming areas along both river banks in the downstream areas in Ban Ta Khun, Khiri Rat Nikhom, and Phun Phin Districts. Farmers can do secondary farming and plant crops in the dry season with good results.
Flood mitigation
Water storage in the reservoir during the rainy season helps lessen the severity of flooding in the downstream area.
Fishery
The reservoir of Rajjaprabha Dam is an important source of inland fishery. Each year, EGAT releases a large number of fish and prawn species into the reservoir which, in turn, gives fishery products of averagely 300 tons per year. This is another way to generate income for the local people.
Tourism
The beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere of Rajjaprabha Dam and its reservoir attract a large number of tourists to the dam. The dam receives more than 150,000 tourists annually.
Electricity generation
The hydropower from the dam can generate electricity and help strengthen the power system in the South. Moreover, the water released through the generator is also transferred for use in agriculture in the downstream area.
Wastewater treatment and mitigation of the impact of saltwater intrusion
In the dry season, the water in Tapi – Phum Duang River which becomes less can negatively affect the condition of water whereas there is saltwater intrusion at the mouth of the river. The water which is released from Rajjaprabha Dam will help to dilute pollution in the river and efficiently prevent the saltwater from intrusion.
Social and environmental projects
Project of Biological Way of Life
The project disseminates knowledge to the public about how to make bio-fertilizer (organic fertilizer) by using microorganism. Another project is marigold flower planting to earn extra income while the price of para-rubber, the main economic tree is getting low. The propagated marigold flowers and the cut flowers are sold in the market of Surat Thani and Phuket Provinces.
Project of Knowledge Sharing
The project gives importance to the youth living in the vicinity of the dam to have knowledge about the power plant near their home and to be proud of the multipurpose dam in the community which is beneficial to the community in terms of water storage, fishery, and tourism which brings about occupation and income to the local people.
