EGAT partners with IEEE PES Thailand hosting “IEEE PES Day 2026” to drive clean energy and advance power system stability for sustainable future
27 April 2026EGAT and IEEE Power & Energy Society (Thailand) co-hosted “IEEE PES Day 2026,” a platform for collaboration on technology and innovation to advance the power grid stability, support the clean energy transition, and develop the next generation of energy professionals.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and IEEE Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) (Thailand) co-hosted “IEEE PES Day 2026” under the theme “Clean Energy Transition: Digital Operations & Grid Resilience.” The event aimed to share knowledge on digital technologies for power grid management and advancement as well as promote clean energy use to achieve the Net Zero goal. Mr. Narin Phoawanich, Governor of EGAT and President of IEEE PES Thailand, chaired the opening ceremony, which was attended by academics, representatives from the public and private sectors, and students at the Auditorium, EGAT 50th Anniversary Building, EGAT Headquarters, on April 22, 2026.

Mr. Narin Phoawanich said that apart from being the foundation day of IEEE PES Thailand, April 22 is Earth Day, which reflects that energy development must take into account the economy, environment, and sustainability. Challenges during the clean energy transition include greenhouse gas emissions reduction as well as technological and economic volatility. Thailand needs to accelerate its structural shift toward a flexible, secure, and sustainable clean energy system through the collaboration of all sectors. This effort goes hand in hand with driving innovation under the concept “Innovating Today, Energizing Tomorrow,” which shows that the role of innovations focuses not only on developing new technologies but also on building a balanced future energy system. The event also featured “IEEE PES 5-Minute Student Project Pitch (5MSPP) Competition,” an activity designed to empower the next generation of energy professionals, which lays the foundation for the nation’s sustainable energy future.

A highlight of the event was a special panel discussion titled “Clean Energy Transition: Digital Operations & Grid Resilience,” which featured speakers: Mr. Warit Rattanachuen, Deputy Governor – Strategy, EGAT; Dr. Somchai Songsiri, Deputy Governor – Office of the Governor, Provincial Electricity Authority; Mr. Knathip Spuntupong, Assistant Governor, Metropolitan Electricity Authority; Dr. Worawut Waruttamapornsu, Country Managing Director, Hitachi Energy (Thailand) Ltd; Mr. Patipan Kalvibool, Chief Technology Officer, Huawei Digital Power Thailand; and Ms. Oratai Suwanwilaikul, First Senior Vice President, B.Grimm Power PLC. The panel was moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Naebboon Hooncharoen, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. The panelists shared the view that the key to Thailand’s clean energy transition lies in leveraging digital technology to manage complex data, coupled with amending energy and power grid regulations to ensure flexibility in a changing context. Moreover, close collaboration between the public and private sectors will drive a secure and sustainable power system in the long term.

In addition, the final round of IEEE PES 5-Minute Student Project Pitch (5MSPP) Competition 2026 was held with seven finalist teams selected from 34 university teams nationwide. The 5MSPP has been held for five consecutive years to foster communication skills, a crucial competency for 21st-century engineers, through concise and effective five-minute presentations of electrical and energy engineering projects. The winner was Team SCB from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi for the project, “Smart Arc Fault Detector and Appliance Classification using Embedded AI.”
