57th EGAT Anniversary: Reinforcing energy security and advancing clean energy amid global energy crisis
5 May 2026EGAT stands strong as a pillar of Thailand’s energy security amid the global energy crisis by reducing reliance on imported fuels while accelerating the transition to clean energy and developing a modern and resilient power grid to strengthen the country’s long-term competitiveness.

On May 1, 2026, Mr. Narin Phoawanich, Governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), stated EGAT’s operational direction on the occasion of its 57th anniversary, highlighting its strong commitment as a pillar in ensuring Thailand’s energy security amid the volatility of the energy crisis due to the Middle East conflict and the slowdown of global economy. He also reassured that Thailand will have a stable and uninterrupted power supply at a reasonable cost.

The energy crisis underscores the need for Thailand to accelerate the development of clean power generation and reduce reliance on imported fuels to diversify its fuel mix. These efforts are essential to strengthening long-term competitiveness and achieving sustainable growth. EGAT is accelerating floating solar projects at its dams, including Bhumibol, Srinagarind, and Vajiralongkorn Dams, with a total installed capacity of 1,638 MW. These projects are currently being prepared for submission to the Cabinet for approval. In parallel, grid modernization is underway to enhance power system flexibility and support the management of increasing fluctuations in renewable energy from its growing share in the power mix. The initiatives include:
- Improving forecasting accuracy of the Renewable Energy Forecast Center by integrating multiple forecasting models, leading to error reduction and covering solar and wind power plants
- Developing large-scale energy storage systems, such as pumped-storage hydropower plants (PSH), which offer low generation costs and can generate electricity to replace renewable energy timely. The PSH at Chulabhorn Dam is currently being prepared for submission to the Cabinet for approval, while the PSH at Vajiralongkorn Dam is set for its second public hearing within this year.
- Upgrading the transmission system to support renewable energy and the expansion of the digital industry in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), including Phanthong, Sattahip 1, and Sattahip 2 Substations in Chon Buri Province, as well as Rayong 2 Substation in Rayong Province, which are scheduled for completion within 2026
At the same time, EGAT continues to explore new sustainable low-carbon energy options, including hydrogen, ammonia, and various carbon capture technologies, to seek suitable technologies for combined-cycle power plants, while Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plants support the demand for power system security, sustainable clean energy, and cost competitiveness. EGAT is also developing new clean energy alternatives such as biomethane and e-methane.
In addition, EGAT is integrating regional energy cooperation among Lao PDR, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore by increasing cross-border power purchase under Phase 2 of the Lao PDR – Thailand – Malaysia – Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) from 100 MW to up to 200 MW. The LTMS-PIP marks another significant step toward the ASEAN Power Grid.

For its business operations, EGAT is prioritizing sustainability in line with the Circular Economy, including the development of Mae Moh Power Plant’s by-products to replace landfill disposal, which comprise fly ash-based concrete and humic soil improvement products, and the extraction of black mass from end-of-life electric vehicle batteries. Besides, EGAT continues its community and environmental stewardship by creating shared value (CSV) under the “100th Anniversary of the Royal Birth: Continuing the Royal Initiative toward Chai Pattana Communities – EGAT Utokapat Project” in collaboration with Chaipattana Foundation and Utokapat Foundation, which applies royal development principles and the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy as a framework to improve community quality of life.
