EGAT highlights “clean, stable, and sufficient power,” upgrading energy infrastructure to drive Thailand toward a data center hub

16 June 2026

At Earth Jump 2026, EGAT assured that Thailand’s power system is ready to support future investments, highlighting three strengths: clean, stable, and sufficient power to attract data center investors. Moreover, EGAT continues to upgrade energy infrastructure to support growing demand for electricity and drive Thailand to become a data center hub. This will be enhanced by collaborating with the private sector to sustainably develop power, water, and technological infrastructure.

Mr. Narin Paowanich, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT); Mr. Nopadej Karnasuta, Chairman of the Association of Private Power Producers; Mr. Smith Banomyong, Chief Strategy Officer of Gulf Development Public Company Limited; and Mr. Bordin Udol, Chief Executive Officer of Eastern Water Resources Development and Management Public Company Limited (East Water), joined a panel discussion titled “No Sustainability, No Scale: The New Rules for AI & Data Centers” at Earth Jump 2026: A Bridge to Empowered Actions. The event, organized for the fourth consecutive year by Kasikorn Bank on June 9, 2026 at Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon, Bangkok, brought together Thai and global leaders to drive sustainability strategies for a sustainable future.

Mr. Narin Paowanich, Governor of EGAT, stated that data centers serve as key strategic infrastructure to attract investments in other digital businesses. Currently, the government is establishing investment conditions for data centers to create added value for the country. From EGAT’s perspective, three major factors needed for consideration to accommodate data centers, all of which EGAT is ready to provide, include:

1. Electricity Quality: The power system must be secure and stable. When comparing statistics on power outages, Thailand’s grid is regarded as one of the most stable in Asia.

2. Power Sufficiency: The system must be ready to support the long-term growth of data centers. To achieve this, EGAT has improved the energy infrastructure by increasing the efficiency of the transmission system. Piloted in three areas in the eastern region, this improvement supplies an additional 550 MW of power. EGAT also plans to expand transmission lines in the future.

3. Sustainability: The system must supply green power to data centers continuously. The government has shown its readiness by offering unspecified-source Utility Green Tariff (UGT1) with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and unspecified-source Utility Green Tariff (UGT2) with RECs. Moreover, EGAT has implemented Grid Modernization to support the growing share of renewable energy. This involves monitoring and controlling systems to prevent power outages and blackouts and enhance grid flexibility.

Mr. Bordin Udol, Chief Executive Officer of East Water, said that crucial factors supporting the establishment of data centers in Thailand are electricity, water for cooling system, and efficient internet system. East Water has prepared water grid by installing water pipeline network in the EEC area spanning over 500 km, connected to major water sources in the eastern region. This will help ensure flexible and efficient water management, ultimately benefiting all stakeholders.

Mr. Smith Banomyong, Chief Strategy Officer of Gulf Development Public Company Limited, emphasized the importance of designing data centers to maximize the efficient use of electricity and water. Although data centers are being introduced to Thailand relatively late, Thailand can gain an advantage by using newer, more advanced, and resource-saving technologies compared to the past.

Mr. Nopadej Karnasuta, Chairman of the Association of Private Power Producers, stated that human resources are vital and raised the question of how promoting data center investments will upskill the Thai workforce with capabilities to create added value for the country.

Earth Jump 2026: A Bridge to Empowered Actions, held on June 9-10, 2026, brought together speakers from various business fields who shared their knowledge and experience for driving changes. The event also included exhibitions by leading organizations to support the transition of the business sector. EGAT’s exhibition booth was staffed by energy experts to provide free consultations and present EGAT Group’s energy innovations for a sustainable future, comprising Smart Energy Solutions, Smart Energy Management System, EV Total Solutions, and Net Zero solutions.
