EGAT Profile

         

EGAT is a state-owned enterprise under the supervision of Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Finance. The principal mission of EGAT is electricity generation, electricity acquisition, and electricity sales to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), a umber of direct customers by law, and neighboring countries. EGAT is also responsible for other related businesses as stipulated by EGAT Act.

Core Business in Electricity

Electricity Generation

Electricity is generated from 54 EGAT power plants countrywide. With a total installed capacity of 16,261.02 MW, EGAT power plants consist of 3 thermal power plants, 6 combined cycle power plants, 30 hydropower plants, 10 renewable energy power plants (wind, solar, and geothermal), 4 diesel power plants, and 1 other power plant.          

Electricity Purchase

In addition to operating its own power plants, EGAT also purchases bulk electricity from 13 Independent Power Producers (IPPs) totaling 19,598.50 MW, from Small Power Producers (SPPs) totaling 9,319.88 MW, and from neighboring countries, namely Lao PDR and Malaysia totaling 6,234.90 MW.

Electricity Transmission

EGAT transmits electricity generated by its own power plants and electricity purchased from private power producers through its own grid network covering all parts of the country. EGAT’s transmission lines comprise different voltages ranging from 500 kV, 230 kV, 132 kV, 115 kV, and 69 kV. EGAT sells electricity to its direct customers and to MEA and PEA to distribute electricity to their retail customers countrywide. Moreover, EGAT also sells electricity to the power utilities of neighboring countries, namely Lao PDR at 115 kV and 22 kV lines and Malaysia at 300 kV HVDC lines.

EGAT Related Business

        EGAT has conducted business transactions in line with its strategy to generate income from its capability and resources. With over 50 years of expertise and experience in the electricity sector, EGAT is entrusted by local and foreign organizations to provide high-quality, one-stop electricity services in two main categories, namely 1) Power plant and transmission system business which includes engineering and construction of power plant and transmission system, power plant operation and maintenance, transmission system maintenance to outside customers consisting of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Small Power Producers (SPPs), and telecommunications, and 2) Innovative energy solutions business which includes innovative by-products from electricity generation, EGAT Smart Energy Solutions, and EGAT EV Business Solutions.

  • Engineering and Construction of Power Plants and Transmission System Business: EGAT has expertise in the development of all types of power projects, from the initial proposal stage to electricity supply and commercial synchronization of power plants. The service includes feasibility study, selection of qualified subcontractors, engineering, project management, testing, and power plant acceptance for local and foreign power producers.

    In 2024, EGAT successfully provided engineering consultancy services for combined cycle power plants with capacities of 2,500 MW and 1,400 MW prior to their Commercial Operation Dates. Moreover, EGAT gave engineering consultancy services for solar farm projects and solar farms combined with battery energy storage system (BESS), technical consultancy for hydropower plants in Lao PDR, and advisory services related to company mergers or acquisitions, consultancy for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Connecting Agreements (CAs) to foreign companies, and specialized studies concerning electricity generation projects.
  • Power Plant Operation and Maintenance Business: EGAT has expertise in comprehensive power plant operation and maintenance. With a professional, specialized team, modern technologies and equipment, and working methods which comply with international standards; EGAT’s services cover power plant operation and routine maintenance as well as general maintenance activities.

    In 2024, EGAT provided power plant operation and maintenance services to local and foreign power plants continuously by renewing contracts with the power plants in Lao PDR and Vietnam, signing new contracts with business alliances, and organizing marketing activities for customer groups to explore related business opportunities. Moreover, EGAT has conducted human resource development to enhance capabilities in power plant operation and maintenance for renewable energy which is a future alternative energy.
  • Transmission System Maintenance Business: EGAT provides technical consultancy to the power plants which are newly connected to the power system and those improving their linkage system. Furthermore, EGAT offers scheduled maintenance for transmission line equipment, high-voltage system equipment in the substations, communication system equipment and prevention system of private power plants, transformer oil collecting and testing for power plant and industrial customers, along with other related services such as preventive and corrective maintenance and renovation.
  • Telecommunications Business: EGAT provides the telecommunications service through its fiber optic network in the high voltage system. EGAT has been granted a license by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to operate the telecommunications business of Type 3 and International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC). EGAT’s optical network covers more than 20,000 kilometers countrywide with over 260 substations. The optical network has been designed to run between the tops of high-voltage transmission towers. The optical ground wire (OPGW) cable is surrounded by layers of steel and aluminum and has high stability. The services provided to public and private sectors are dark fiber, domestic and international bandwidth, and Internet Protocol Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP MPLS). EGAT is ready to support the country’s development in expanding 5G IoT (Internet of Things) network and other fundamental telecommunications networks in the future. EGAT also supports the government policy of digital economy in integrating the network infrastructure such as Internet of Things (IoT), Internet Data Center (IDC), Big Data Analytics, Cloud Edge data processing system in digital platforms, and 5G with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • By-Product Business: EGAT has operated the innovative by-products business in line with EGAT circular economy strategic plan in order to transform into a circular economy organization, enhance sustainable competitiveness, and drive the country toward Carbon Neutrality by promoting cost-effective and maximum use of resources and zero disposal. To achieve the goal, the by-product from electricity generation of Mae Moh Power Plant such as lignite fly ash is used to substitute for cement which could reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 690,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to planting 57 million trees. Synthetic gypsum, another by-product, is used in producing cement, fiber cement, Wood Plastic Composite (WPC), and soil amendment. Humic, a new product developed by EGAT as a by-product of Mae Moh Mine, can help increase productivity, add plant nutrients, reduce cost, and enhance sustainability to the agricultural sector.

    Moreover, EGAT continues to develop innovative by-products from electricity generation in cooperation with leading local educational institutions and specialists in related fields. In 2024, there were three research projects as follows:
  • 1. Study of concrete property with the mixture of high calcium fly ash and fly ash contaminated with ammonia and the determination of the maximum amount of free lime and SO2 in concrete
  • 2. Development of innovative pollution-free ceiling board from FGD gypsum
  • 3. Development of porous geopolymer insulating material to replace thermal and sound insulation, using environmentally friendly materials synthesized from fly ash and pigment sludge
  • Smart Energy Solutions: Based on its experience in the electricity industry for over 50 years, EGAT Smart Energy Solutions focuses on the further development of products and services covering all dimensions of energy management, ranging from design, installation, and maintenance, with an emphasis on renewable energy such as solar power and energy storage systems, as well as application of the energy management platforms to meet the needs of the Thai business sector and society.

    In 2024, EGAT implemented the projects and activities to promote efficient and sustainable energy use. EGAT cooperated with the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand to launch the EGAT Smart Energy Solutions project as an energy management model at Chiang Mai Zoo, focusing on the use of renewable energy and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Another project involved the installation of solar systems in 100 branches of the Government Saving Bank across the country.

    Moreover, EGAT signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Krungsri Bank to promote Smart Energy Solutions, focusing on providing knowledge and financial support to the business sector to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs. To promote clean energy, EGAT also cooperated with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand to organize a lecture titled “Sustainable Industrial Future” to promote sustainable energy use in the industrial sector.
  • EV Business Solutions: In line with the Low Carbon Society strategy, EGAT EV Business Solutions operates with an aim of promoting the transition to electric vehicles by focusing on strengthening and expanding the EV ecosystem comprehensively. EGAT supports the development of EV charging infrastructure by providing services such as EV charging stations, an EV application, and EV charging station management systems.

    In 2024, EGAT EV Business Solutions delivered the following services:
    1. Expanding the network of “EleX by EGAT” charging stations to a total of 289 stations. Some stations are operated by EGAT, while others are managed by partners such as PT petrol stations, Sahapat Group, Home Product Center Public Co., Ltd., BMW (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Sathorn Thani Building, Central Pattana Public Co., Ltd.
    2. Providing the “EleXA” application, which facilitates EV drivers in locating and reserving the chargers, ordering charging, and making payments. EGAT also provides additional features such as Trip Planner. The application is connected with other platforms such as MEA EV (MEA), PEA VOLTA (PEA), EV Station PluZ (OR), EA Anywhere, and GWM. For payment, the system is also connected with MEA EV and PEA VOLTA.
    3. Providing the “BackEN EV” management system to support the private sector and investors in setting up and operating commercial EV charging stations easily and rapidly. The BackEN EV supports charging station management, including ordering charging and making payments. Presently, the system serves around 100 clients, including hotels, apartments, restaurants, department stores, etc.
    4. Providing EGAT EV Total Solution consisting of area surveys, consultancy, layout design, charger installation, charging station management, and customer service to EV drivers.

  • RATCH Group Public Company Limited (RATCH)

   Nature of Business

RATCH was established as a holding company on March 7, 2000. RATCH gets dividends from its subsidiaries and joint ventures as main revenue.

The company focuses mainly on investing, developing, and joining with business partners in different projects both in Thailand and abroad. The investments are focused on the following areas:

  1. Electricity generation business comprising baseload and renewable power plants, both domestically and internationally
  2. Related business and others covering infrastructure system development such as transportation system, telecommunications network, waterworks system, and investments in the new S-Curve industry

As of December 31, 2024, RATCH had a total installed capacity of 10,814.83 MW comprising 5,474.30 MW from local projects and 5,340.53 MW from overseas projects.

Shareholding

As of December 31, 2024, RATCH had a total registered capital of 22,192.31 million Baht of which 21,750 million Baht are issued and paid up, equivalent to 2,175 million shares. Its ownership structure is composed of 45% stakes held by EGAT and 55% stakes held by the general public.

  • EGAT International Company Limited (EGATi)

   Nature of Business

EGATi was established by EGAT on December 18, 2007. The objective of EGATi is to represent EGAT in overseas investments in order to acquire electricity back to Thailand and expand investment opportunities in electricity business and EGAT’s related businesses to create value-added and be beneficial for EGAT’s other businesses and Thailand.

At present, EGATi has four commercial projects in operation, namely Nam Ngiep 1 Hydropower in Lao PDR, Adaro Coal Mine in Indonesia, Solar Power Plant in Taiwan, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Taiwan. The generating capacity according to the share is 117.95 MW. The other four projects which are in the process of development/request for investments are Venus Thermal Power Plant in Vietnam, Nam Ngum 3 Hydropower in Lao PDR, as well as Renewable Power Plant and BESS in Taiwan. The generating capacity according to the share is 454.05 MW.

As of December 31, 2024, EGATi had a total installed capacity according to the share of 572 MW from overseas projects.

As of December 31, 2024, EGATi had a total registered capital of 12,197.4 million Baht (1,219.74 million shares). EGAT holds 99.99% stakes in EGATi.

  • EGAT Diamond Service Company Limited (EDS)

   Nature of Business

EDS is a joint venture business founded on December 15, 2009 by EGAT, Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (MPW-AP), Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), and RATCH. The objective of the company is to provide refurbishment work for the hot gas path parts of gas turbines in 18 countries, namely Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Maldives. The Gas Turbine Refurbishment Service Center which is located in Navanakorn Industrial Estate, Pathum Thani Province started its commercial operation in May 2011.

On November 15, 2022, the Cabinet approved the proposal of the company to change its business objectives with a broader scope of business operation, from refurbishment of gas turbine parts and power plant operation and maintenance to cover maintenance service, manufacturing of parts relating to the power industry, and power plant operation.

At present, EDS provides maintenance service and manufactures parts, components, and equipment for gas turbine power plants, the power industry, and other related industries. Newly launched business operations include the production of DC fast chargers with the brand FlexxFast by EDS, as well as installation services and after-sales service.  

Shareholding

As of December 31, 2024, EDS had a total registered capital of 623 million Baht (6.23 million shares). Its ownership structure is composed of EGAT, MPW-AP, MC, and RATCH with the portion of 45%, 30%, 15%, and 10% stakes respectively.

Associated Company

  • Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO)

   Nature of Business

EGCO was established by EGAT as a holding company on May 12, 1992. Its revenues are mainly from dividends of subsidiaries and joint ventures.

EGCO focuses mainly on electricity business locally and abroad as well as energy-related business. The business of EGCO can be categorized into two groups as follows: 

  1. Electricity business covering the following countries: Thailand, Lao PDR, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, and the USA with power plants using diverse fuel types
  2. Energy-related businesses such as energy service, coal mining, oil pipeline business, clean energy project development, online platform service, natural gas acquisition and wholesale business, and infrastructure and public utility business

As of December 31, 2024, EGCO had a total generating capacity of 7,261.59 MW consisting of 3,097.03 MW from domestic projects and 4,164.56 MW from overseas projects.

Shareholding

As of December 31, 2024, EGCO had the total registered capital   amounting to 5,300 million Baht of which 5,264.65 million Baht was issued and paid-up. The number of shares is 526.465 million shares. EGCO’s shareholders are EGAT (25.41%), TEPDIA Generating B.V. (23.94%), and the general public (50.65%).

Joint Venture

  • District Cooling System and Power Plant Company Limited (DCAP)

Nature of Business

DCAP is a joint venture business founded on April 2, 2003 by EGAT, PTT Public Co., Ltd. (PTT), and MEA. The objective of the company is to generate and sell electricity and cooling water to Suvarnabhumi International Airport. At present, to support the Green Airport policy of Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the company focuses on developing clean power plants by initiating a solar power generation within the Suvarnabhumi International Airport area. As of December 31, 2024, DCAP had a total generating capacity of 98.90 MW and a total cooling water producing capacity of 45,000 RT.

Shareholding As of December 31, 2024, DCAP had a total registered capital of 1,670 million Baht (167 million shares). Its ownership structure is composed of EGAT, PTT, and MEA with the proportion of 35%, 35%, and 30% stakes respectively.

  •  INNOPOWER Company Limited

Nature of Business

INNOPOWER is a joint venture business registered as a company on September 13, 2021 by EGAT, EGCO, and RATCH. The objective of the company is to upgrade the research and innovations of EGAT Group and allied companies to expand the business commercially and invest in startup businesses in the energy industry. At present, in striving to become a decarbonization partner for the business and industrial sectors, the company operates three business units as follows:

  1. Energy business: Conduct business concerning future energy, Grid Modernization, and solar engineering, procurement, and construction (Solar EPC)
  2. EV business: Conductbusiness of supplying EV chargers and one stop service, including service of EV bus fleet
  3. Environmental business: Conduct business concerning REC trading and greenhouse gas reporting

Moreover, the company has established a subsidiary in Singapore to prepare for the launch of a fund aimed at raising capital to invest in overseas startups in CarbonTech and EmissionTech, and to act as the fund management company. It has also established a subsidiary in Thailand to operate businesses focused on the development of digital innovations and technologies, including platform development tailored to the needs of EGAT’s new business units.

As of December 31, 2024, INNOPOWER had a total registered capital of 1,900 million Baht (19 million shares). Its ownership structure is composed of EGAT, EGCO, and RATCH with the portion of 40%, 30%, and 30% stakes respectively.

  • PE LNG Company Limited (PE LNG)d

Nature of Business

PE LNG was founded on June 16, 2023 by PTTLNG Co., Ltd. EGAT started holding the shares of 50% on April 30, 2024 to develop the LNG Receiving Terminal (2nd terminal) Project, which involves the operation of a terminal for unloading, storage, and regasification, with the total capacity of 7.5 million tons per year.

Shareholding

As of December 31, 2024, PE LNG had a total registered capital of 28,799.29 million Baht (2,879.93 million shares). Its ownership structure is composed of EGAT and PTTLNG with the portion of 50% and 50% stakes respectively.

Investment

  • InnoSpace (Thailand) Company Limited

Nature of Business

Innospace was founded by the cooperation of the public and private sectors on January 14, 2019. The objective of the company is to serve as a national startup platform in promoting and developing the startup economy in Thailand in full range to drive the country toward a sustainable innovation-based economy. EGAT has invested in InnoSpace since August 19, 2021. At present, the company focuses on investing in and developing startups in the medical industry, food industry, and 4.0 industry.

Shareholding

As of December 31, 2024, InnoSpace had a total registered capital of 835.01 million Baht of which 417.50 million Baht was issued and paid up. The number of shares is 835,010 shares. Its ownership structure is composed of EGAT and other partners in the proportion of 11.98% and 88.02% stakes respectively.
