Bang Pakong Power Plant
(Chachoengsao Province)

Thermal Power Plant
Combined Cycle power plant

Natural gas/fuel oil
natural gas/diesel
3,248 MW
The first power plant using natural gas from the Gulf of Thailand for electricity generation
Background
Since natural gas was discovered in the Erawan Field in the Gulf of Thailand in 1973, it was the beginning of electricity generation from natural gas and the achievement of the country to be self-reliant on energy, leading to the Age of Brightness and the origin of Bang Pakong Power Plant.
Bang Pakong Power Plant was constructed in 1977 and completed in 1981 using natural gas as fuel. The opening ceremony was performed on January 8, 1985 by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The power plant has enhanced economic growth in the eastern area and supported Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate.
Apart from power development, EGAT has placed importance on environmental care. Being the large thermal power plant situated on the bank of Bang Pakong River and near the fish cage culture and the source of aquatic animal breeding, EGAT has installed automatic water thermometer to monitor the temperature of waste water before releasing it into the public water source to minimize the impact on aquatic ecosystem. Environmental protection is EGAT’s vital mission as same as maintaining security of the power system.
