Bang Pakong Power Plant

Background

Bang Pakong Power Plant is the first power plant of the country to use natural gas from the Gulf of Thailand as fuel in power generation. This is in response to the Government policy in maximizing benefit of the local natural resources and in the exploration for more energy sources.

In 1973, the Erawan Field was discovered to have a sufficient amount of natural gas for commercial operation. The submarine gas pipeline was installed to convey natural gas to the coastal area in Rayong Province. The natural gas production started for the first time in Thailand in 1981.

The opening ceremony of Bang Pakong Power Plant was performed on January 8, 1985 by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
