Bang Pakong Power Plant
Social & Environmental Management
Water quality
Wastewater in the power plant is treated initially according to its characteristics; for example, water contaminated with oil is treated in the grease trap tank for grease separation, wastewater from the production process of demineralized water and fresh water is neutralized. Wastewater from office building, restaurant, and housing is treated in the on-site package sewage treatment tank. After the initial treatment, all wastewater will be conveyed to the central wastewater treatment of the power plant which comprises aeration and wetland treatment where several kinds of vegetation is used in water treatment. Finally, the water will be transferred to a large cesspool where water will be controlled to the standard criteria of the Department of Industrial Works before utilized in the power plant such as plant watering, road cleaning, etc.
Air quality
Dry Low NOx Burner is installed to control the emission according the standard. Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) is installed at the stack of the power plant to report the result of the measurement of Nitrogen Oxide and Sulfur Dioxide on the screens in front of the power plant and 8 communities. Moreover, reports of the implementation of the measures to prevent and mitigate the environmental impact, including a measure to monitor the environmental quality are prepared every 6 months for information of the Department of Industrial Works and Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand. The occasional measurement of Nitrogen Oxide, Sulfur Dioxide, and dust from the stack is conducted twice a year.
Noise
Silencer is installed at the air inlet of the burner. A room to enclose the machinery which is the source of noise such as generator, air compressors, gas turbine, steam turbine, and pump to control the noise to be not louder than 85 dB (A) at the distance of 1 m is built. A notice or warning symbol is used to indicate the area louder than 85 dB (A). The area of loud noise such as boiler, burning chamber of gas turbine, and gas turbine generator is indicated with warning to the operators to wear hearing protection such as ear plugs or ear muff.
Waste
Disposal of waste from office building and housing is contracted to the Tha Kham Municipality. For the waste at the pumping station where water is pumped to the cooling system which is the floating waste from the river and left on the grating in front of the pumping station, plastic bags will be separated and sent to the Municipality whereas water hyacinth and weeds will be processed as compost for use in the area of the power plant. Waste contaminated by chemical will be collected and sent to the authorized agency for disposal.
Aquatic ecosystem
The wastewater which has been treated and stored in the cesspool has been used in the power plant for the maximum benefit such as plant watering and road cleaning without releasing into the public water source in order to prevent the impact on the aquatic ecosystem. Automatic water thermometer is installed in the Bang Pakong River where there is fish cage culture. Moreover, the power plant supports the activity in aquatic ecosystem conservation of the community.
