- Quality of life development
To develop the quality of life of villagers living around Ban Khao Yai Thiang, the Lamtakong Power Plant Project has carried out the following activities:
• Improvement of non-asphalt road to be asphalt road and construction of concrete road in the village
• Improvement of former weir and reservoir and construction of new reservoir
• Construction of sport field, children playground, and multipurpose building
• Construction of water supply system for consumption
• Establishment of Child Development Center
• Provision of medical mobile service for health care 3 times a year
- Establishment of Khao Yai Thiang Agricultural Cooperatives
In cooperation with the Cooperatives Promotion Department, Khao Yai Thiang Agricultural Cooperatives Limited was established in November 1995 with the sum of 24 million Baht financed by EGAT. The Co-op has 122 members at the beginning.
- Occupational promotion
EGAT has collaborated with various government agencies to organize occupational training for villagers according to their interest. Demonstration of Occupational Promotion Center is set up for villagers to practice before they can adopt as a career such as chicken raising, mushroom cultivation, etc.
In addition, agricultural demonstration plot for self-reliance based on sufficiency economy has been organized such as local chicken raising, duck raising, fish raising in the small pond, organic vegetables planting for consumption and for sale. Fruit tree planting is promoted among the villagers who have been allocated the land of 3.5 rai. The villagers are free to choose the trees they like and under the consultation of the academics and they will be temporarily subsidized during the period of 24 months while the trees have not yet borne fruit.
- Conservation of fishery resource in the reservoir
EGAT has cooperated with the Department of Fisheries to conserve and develop fishery resource in a correct way. Fish and shrimp species are released into the reservoir to increase the amount of aquatic product in order to generate income for the local fishermen. During the years 2001-2002 which was an early phase of electricity generation of the power plant, EGAT made a contract with the Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University to study aquatic ecosystem and fisheries in the reservoir of Lamtakong Dam to collect data for the preparation of fishery resource conservation plan.
- Environmental restoration and development
EGAT gave financial support to the Royal Forest Department for the restoration of watershed forest of 7,685 rai. Moreover, EGAT joined the government agencies, schools, and the local people in the reforestation project in honor of the King.
- Land allocation for villagers
The ad hoc group on arable land selection chaired by Sikhio District-Chief Officer was assigned by the Committee on assistance to villagers and environmental development of Lamtakong Power Plant Project to study the details of occupational promotion in the arable land and to set up the appropriate guidelines for land allocation. The ad hoc group decided to allocate the land of 3.5 rai for each household. Each plot is provided with fruit trees and facilities such as roads, water source, and water system.
- Landscaping of the land reclamation
In order to restore and develop the land reclamation around Lamtakong reservoir which is caused by the drilling of tunnel and underground power plant to become a rest area and viewpoint for tourists travelling on Friendship Highway, “Thao Suranaree Garden” is constructed to keep the natural environment. Thao Suranaree Garden is a semi-arboretum covering an area of 96 rai comprising a car park, sculpture yard, multipurpose yard, botanical garden, fish pond, waterfront rest area, plant nursery, restrooms, community products kiosk, and health park.
