Background

In the early time of electricity generation development of EGAT, Thailand was expanding developments from the city to several local areas. The government tried to move industrial zones from Bangkok to its suburbs and the regions.

South Bangkok Power plant is a power source constructed in response to the electricity demand of heavy industries in the Southern part of Bangkok such as battery plants, automobile assembly plants, animal feed processing plants, etc. It also helps decrease power outages or blackouts.

South Bangkok Power Plant was constructed according to the policy of the 2nd National Economic and Social Development Plan (1967-1971). The construction began in 1967 and was completed in 1970. The power plant has a generating capacity of 1,330 MW using fuel oil as fuel. On November 6, 1972, the opening ceremony of the South Bangkok Power Plant was performed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great.

Presently, the combined cycle power plant uses natural gas from the Thai Gulf and Myanmar as the main fuel and diesel as the secondary fuel for electricity generation. It is community and environmentally friendly.
