CMRU undertakes Smart University model with EGAT’s energy management system and expects to save 110 million Baht

4 October 2022

Chiang Mai Rajabhat University and EGAT signed a contract to provide energy management services with a guaranteed renewable electricity generation system in the university’s Smart Campus project area. EGAT’s energy management system would be used to improve energy efficiency with a Win-Win Solution. The project aims to become a model for other universities and communities, promote energy conservation, and reduce electricity cost by 110 million Baht.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chatree Maneekosol, Acting President of Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (CMRU) and Mr. Boonyanit Wongrukmit, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) signed a contract to provide energy management services with a guaranteed renewable electricity generation system in the Smart Campus project area, CMRU.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chatree Maneekosol said that CMRU is a university for local development and the first university signing the contract with EGAT. The success of this cooperation is the first step of global warming mitigation, energy conservation, and social responsibility. CMRU hopes that this project will become a model for smart universities on energy conservation, as well as a model for other universities and communities in the future. The knowledge and benefits gained from this project will be disseminated to the community through the educational process. Concurrently, there will be a joint research with EGAT for further scientific progress.

Mr. Boonyanit Wongrukmit said that the world is facing global warming due to carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, EGAT and CMRU were determined to develop the university with the “Smart Campus – Chiang Mai Rajabhat University” project, as well as integrate technology and innovation research from both parties through the local Energy Management System (EMS) developed by EGAT, the ENZY Platform Application for energy management in buildings, and the ENGY Wall energy storage system, which are the main equipment to help manage solar energy according to electricity demands in buildings and save electricity cost. Moreover, the local energy management system could connect with the energy storage system and the high-priority data collection system, making the data collection system secure and saving cost and time from the lack of continuous electricity. The stored energy could also be used to create flexibility in energy management and save electricity cost. The platform EGAT prepared in the Smart Campus is ready for CMRU to study to advance research studies and create new innovations and benefits for the country.

CMRU’s Smart Campus consists of two areas, namely the Wiang Bua area and the Mae Rim Center area. EGAT aims to develop CMRU into a clean energy university by installing a 1.43 MW solar energy generating system, a 250 kWh energy storage system, an energy management system to manage energy usage in the university, and an EV charging station for normal charging and for supplying energy from Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), along with converting campus buses that use oil into EVs and improving street lights to be smart street lights in order to create a complete smart campus and support the university’s Net Zero policy. The duration of this contract is 15 years with a value of 117 million Baht, and afterwards EGAT will change the expired equipment. Meanwhile, CMRU could save electricity cost around 110 million Baht.
