Western Digital and EGAT support the use of electricity from renewable energy,
to achieve Net Zero Emissions

7 November 2022

Western Digital partners with EGAT to promote the use of electricity from renewable energy guaranteed by REC provided by INNOPOWER, while energy innovation has been jointly developed to drive Thailand toward Net Zero Emissions.

On November 4, 2022, Dr. Sampan Silapanad, Vice President of Western Digital Storage Technologies (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Chief Thailand Business Strategist, Global HDD Assembly & Backend Operations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mr. Warit Rattanachuen, Assistant Governor – Research, Innovation and Business Development, as the Project Management Office of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to promote the use of electricity from renewable energy with the aim to achieve Net Zero Emissions. Mr. Athip Tantivorawong, Chief Executive Officer of INNOPOWER Company Limited, and senior executives from the three companies witnessed the ceremony at the Press Conference Room, 3rd Floor, EGAT 50th Anniversary Building, EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.

Mr. Warit Rattanachuen revealed that EGAT aims to enhance its operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the global trend of climate change mitigation. EGAT has a policy to increase the proportion of production and accelerate the development of power generation from green energy, coupled with promoting clean energy purchasing mechanisms. The cooperation between Western Digital and EGAT originated from an alliance that participated in a project of experimental electricity supply from renewable energy called the Utility Green Tariff. Under the ERC Sandbox Project, Phase 2, organized by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) with the goal to create the standard of energy innovation, Western Digital and EGAT saw an opportunity to expand and develop their joint efforts toward Net Zero Emissions.

Dr. Sampan Silapanad said that Western Digital, as one of the world’s largest data storage providers, always places importance on environment and energy management with a concern on social responsibility and compliance with regulations and international standards, in line with sustainable business growth. The company has set an ambitious goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over 40% by 2030 and move toward green and world-class manufacturing to achieve Net Zero Emissions.

In addition, Mr. Athip Tantivorawong said that INNOPOWER has played an important role in procuring Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) to support the experiment with electricity supply from renewable energy. Under the ERC Sandbox Project, Phase 2, the company will enhance the development mechanism of electricity use and generation from renewable energy which meets international green energy standards to achieve Net Zero Emissions.

For this collaboration, Western Digital, EGAT, and INNOPOWER are determined to drive innovation and technology development in the energy sector, by building cooperation with government and private organizations to create the Renewable Energy Ecosystem, in line with the clean energy direction and global goal of Net Zero Emissions. Moreover, the success case will be expanded toward sustainable business development.
