EGAT joins hands with Sinohydro to install STATCOM at Khlong Ngae Substation, elevating grid stability to support green energy

16 July 2026

EGAT has partnered with Sinohydro (Thailand) Co., Ltd. to install STATCOM, a technology designed to enhance grid flexibility, accommodate the volatility of renewable energy, and expand power transmission capacity to support economic growth.

On July 15, 2026, Mr. Teerawut Wetatham, Deputy Governor – Transmission System Development of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), officially handed over the procurement and construction contract for the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) at Khlong Ngae Substation in Songkhla Province to Mr. Zhang Guodong, Vice President of Sinohydro (Thailand) Co., Ltd., at EGAT 50th Anniversary Building, EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.

Mr. Teerawut Wetatham, Deputy Governor – Transmission System Development, revealed that the STATCOM installation at Khlong Ngae Substation is part of the transmission system improvement project covering the western and southern regions. The project aims to strengthen power grid stability and increase electricity transmission capacity from the central region to the south. Scheduled for completion in 2028, the project will meet growing electricity demand of the industrial and tourism sectors in southern Thailand in the long term.

STATCOM is a device that rapidly controls and stabilizes voltage levels within normal parameters, thereby accommodating the high fluctuations of large-scale renewable energy integration. It increases the flexibility of the power grid and prevents widespread voltage drops or power outages. Moreover, the technology enhances the efficiency of cross-regional power transmission and will facilitate future cross-border electricity trading with Malaysia through the ASEAN Power Grid. This project fosters the nation’s socio-economic development and drives Thailand toward the goal of Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
