Chulabhorn Dam

Background

Chulabhorn Dam, formerly known as “Nam Phrom Dam” was a power project in the Northeastern Development Project. The dam was built across Prom River on Khun Phai Hillchain in the area called “Phu Yuak” in Thung Phra Sub-district, Khon San District, Chaiyaphum Province.

Being an important power development that can respond adequately to the power demand of the Northeast, Chulabhorn Dam is a multipurpose dam that serves irrigation purpose for planting in the dry season of the agricultural areas of around 50,300 rai along Nam Phrom River and 20,800 rai along Nam Chern River. Moreover, the dam’s reservoir is an important freshwater fish breeding source in the Northeast. The dam is also known as “Thai Switzerland” as it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and has a pleasantly cool climate all year round.

Nam Phrom Project was approved by the cabinet on June 17, 1969 and the dam and power plant construction was conducted by EGAT in January 1970. After the completion of the construction, the operation started in October 1972. The opening of the dam and the power plant was performed on June 3, 1973 by Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great and Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother and Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn. The dam was given the name Chulabhorn after Princess Chulabhorn.
