Thailand is approaching a pivotal moment in its energy transition. After relying primarily on fossil fuels for electricity generation, the country is entering a new era. As the nation works toward achieving Net Zero Emissions, balancing energy security, economic value, and environmental sustainability has become a national priority. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is driving the transition toward sustainable energy by integrating future technologies and innovations while creating opportunities for all sectors to participate. EGAT aims to deliver secure, reliable, and sustainable energy for future generations.
Sustainable with Clean Energy, Secure through Grid-Stabilizing Technologies

EGAT aims to increase the share of renewable energy to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the development of a wide range of clean energy projects, including hydropower, wind power, solar power, and floating solar power plants (FPVs). At the same time, EGAT is modernizing the national power grid through grid modernization to strengthen energy security. Key initiatives include the development of Energy Storage Systems (ESS), comprising both Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which can respond to electricity demand within milliseconds, and Pumped-Storage Hydropower (PSH), which serves as large-scale energy storage. These technologies help ensure that renewable energy becomes a reliable energy source. EGAT has also developed innovative energy solutions to support energy management, such as the Renewable Energy Forecast Center (REFC), which forecasts electricity generation from wind and solar power. The REFC enables the National Control Center to optimize power plant dispatch and system operations, improving the grid’s ability to accommodate the variability of renewable energy with greater efficiency and security.
Additionally, EGAT is exploring emerging energy technologies to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. These include studying the production and use of hydrogen with natural gas in power generation to enhance the potential for reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector. EGAT is also studying Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), a key technology for achieving Carbon Neutrality by capturing carbon dioxide for use or safe storage in underground geological formations. CCUS is considered another important solution for reducing carbon emissions at the source in an efficient and sustainable manner.
Sustainability through SMRs, Unlocking a More Stable and Secure Energy Future

Due to the limitations of renewable energy, which cannot generate electricity continuously 24/7, it cannot be relied upon as the sole source of power. Therefore, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are considered a key solution to overcoming energy security challenges. SMRs are designed to be highly safe, can be constructed more quickly, and can generate electricity continuously 24/7 without carbon dioxide emissions. They can serve as a main source of electricity that complements renewable energy. EGAT has continuously built its knowledge and expertise in nuclear power for more than 50 years. We see SMRs not just as another alternative energy source, but as a way of laying the foundation for a power system that is secure, competitive, and sustainable for the future.
Our Collective Power Creating Big Change for a Sustainable Thailand

In addition to the electricity generation sector, EGAT also supports the transition to a low-carbon society in the transportation sector by developing a comprehensive EV ecosystem. This includes EleX by EGAT charging stations, the EleXA application for users’ convenient access to charging services, and the BackEN management system, which integrates charging station data, electricity load management, and payment management into a single platform. These initiatives aim to build public trust and encourage wider EV adoption across the country, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector.
Another important foundation is promoting energy efficiency in households through the No. 5 energy-saving label, which has been familiar to Thai people for decades. Today, EGAT and the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) have introduced a new generation of the No. 5 energy-saving label, raising energy efficiency standards while providing information on greenhouse gas emissions throughout a product’s life cycle. This helps build double trust among consumers and encourages manufacturers to develop products with even higher standards. The small contribution made by each household’s choice of energy-efficient appliances may seem insignificant, but when combined, it creates a tremendous impact. For more than 30 years, the No. 5 energy-saving label has helped reduce more than 22 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, demonstrating how our collective power can drive meaningful change for the country.

EGAT is moving forward with clean energy development by integrating efforts across all dimensions and working together with all Thais to achieve Net Zero Emissions.
