Tha Thung Na Dam
(Kanchanaburi Province)
Background
“Dam” is a part of water source development for the utmost benefits in irrigation, agriculture, and electricity generation, as well as raising the quality of life of the locals.
Considering the benefit of “Tha Thung Na Dam,” a project under the Kwai Yai River Basin Development Plan, it is regarded as an efficient use of the Kwai Yai River Basin. Situated at the downstream of Srinagarind Dam, it serves as a lower reservoir to control and store water discharged from Srinagarind Dam. The dam reuses the discharged water to generate electricity. After that the discharged water will be pumped back to generate electricity again at Srinagarind Dam, making the power generation more efficient. In addition, the dam helps alleviate the high water level downstream of the Kwai Yai River caused by the water discharge of Srinagarind Dam.
Tha Thung Na Dam started its commercial operation in December 1981 and February 1982, respectively. The opening of the dam was officially performed on April 16, 1982. Presently, the power plant has a contracted generating capacity of 39 MW.
