Tha Thung Na Dam

(Kanchanaburi Province)

Background

“Dam” is a component of water source development to be utilized worthwhile in irrigation, agriculture and electricity generation as well as developing the quality of life of local people to have a better wellbeing.

When considering the cost and benefit of “Tha Thung Na Dam”, a project under the Kwai Yai River Basin Development Plan, it is regarded as the efficient use of Kwai Yai River Basin. Tha Thung Na Dam is situated at the end of Srinagarind Dam serving as the lower reservoir to control and store water discharged form Srinagarind Dam to generate electricity again. Moreover, the water discharged from Tha Thung Na Dam can be pumped to generate electricity again at Srinagarind Dam. Tha Thung Na Dam will enhance the power generation at Srinagarind Dam to be more efficient. In addition, the dam will help alleviate the problem of high water level downstream of Kwai Yai River caused by the water discharge of Srnagarind Dam.

Tha Thung Na Dam has supplied electricity since December 1981 and February 1983 respectively. The opening of the dam was officially performed on 16 April 1982. Presently, the power plant has contractual generating capacity of 39 MW.
