EGAT to develop hydro-floating solar hybrid project at Ubol Ratana Dam, another step towards Carbon Neutrality
11 February 2022EGAT is going to develop the hydro-floating solar hybrid project at Ubol Ratana Dam, to support the government’s goal of carbon neutrality after the success of Sirindhorn Dam Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid Project. The hybrid project can enhance the power system stability, deal with intermittency of renewable energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions of 47,000 tons per year.
Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) revealed that EGAT is going to develop Ubol Ratana Dam Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid Project in Khon Kaen Province with the generating capacity of 24 MW. This project will generate electricity by the combination of solar power and hydropower from the dam. Moreover, it will be equipped with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to enhance efficiency and continuity of power generation. Prior to this ongoing project development, a report regarding the operation of the first hydro-floating solar hybrid project at Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani Province shows that the project gained its achievement as planned.
As stated in the report, the 45-MW Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid Project at Sirindhorn Dam which began commercial operation on October 31, 2021 can enhance the power system stability and reduce intermittency of renewable energy. From environmental impact monitoring, it has been found that the floating pontoons installed in the reservoir do not affect marine ecosystem and environment. Besides, electricity generation from clean energy is a part of EGAT carbon neutrality strategies, a mechanism to compensate and avoid carbon dioxide emissions. The project can reduce greenhouse gas emissions of 47,000 tons per year as well. All of these findings will benefit the development of future hydro-floating solar hybrid projects as specified in Thailand Power Development Plan 2018-2037, Revision 1.
EGAT is now ready for the sale of bidding documents for Ubol Ratana Dam Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid Project.
