EGAT develops Mae Hong Son Smart Grid Project to promote energy security and green tourism
2 June 2022EGAT and Italthai Engineering signed the purchase and construction contract of Smart Grid Pilot Project in Mae Hong Son Province to enhance energy security and stability with smart grid system, promote green tourism in accordance with the provincial vision, and aim at being the leader of smart grid in ASEAN.

On June 1, 2022, Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), on behalf of EGAT, signed the purchase and construction contract of Smart Grid Pilot Project in Mae Hong Son Province with Mr. Sakol Laosuwan, Chief Executive Officer and Mr. Chaiyod Wongwaitayakornkul, Chief Operating Officer of Italthai Engineering Co., Ltd. The executives of both parties also joined the contract signing ceremony at the conference room on the 3rd floor of EGAT 50th Anniversary Building in Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province.
Mr. Prasertsak Cherngchawano said that the Smart Grid Pilot Project in Mae Hong Son Province is included in Thailand’s smart grid development plan. The project integrates many technologies to enhance grid stability in Mae Hong Son, which will prevent power outages in the province. The smart grid system will be connected with every power plant in the province via Micro grid Control Center System that efficiently manages a balance between electricity generation and consumption. EGAT also plans to develop the project to become a research and development center of the related agencies before expanding the smart grid system to other areas with power shortage, in order for Thailand to be the leader of smart grid technology and deployment in ASEAN.
The Smart Grid Pilot Project in Mae Hong Son Province, expected to complete in December 2022, aims to construct a 3 MW solar power plant together with 4 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) added to Mae Hong Son’s power generation facilities. The project will also promote the province’s green tourism in accordance with the provincial vision by providing EV buses, EV charging stations, the energy and cultural learning center, activity space, and the sale of community products. It is expected that the project will help generate community income and boost the provincial economy.
Mr. Sakol Laosuwan said that this contract signing is regarded another step of Italthai Engineering’s achievements as it will show the company’s capability of smart grid engineering. It is also the project that the two organizations develop for people in Mae Hong Son Province to have stable power system and better quality of life. Moreover, the project will truly benefit the society. The company will cooperate fully so that the project goals will be achieved as planned.
