EGAT organizes train trip for reforestation in Chumphon to foster eco-awareness in youth
14 September 2022Chumphon Province, EGAT, and Mu Ko Chumphon National Park held a mangrove reforestation activity with the participation of the youth to cultivate awareness of forest conservation and create a good environment and air, which is a part of a 1-million rai reforestation project within 2031.

On September 13, 2022, Chumphon Province, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and Mu Ko Chumphon National Park held a mangrove reforestation activity under the Participatory Reforestation Project. On this occasion, Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, EGAT Deputy Governor – Strategy, executives of the National Park, and over 400 participants from nearby communities, students, and youth networks jointly planted trees at Tung Ka – Sawi Mangrove Forest, Mu Ko Chumphon National Park, Chumphon Province.

Mr. Somporn Patchimpetch, Deputy Governor of Chumphon Province, revealed that Chumphon Province has supported the governmental policy to solve climate change. EGAT’s Participatory Reforestation Project is another vital project to help absorb and store carbon dioxide with the participation and cooperation of public organizations and the locals to revive the abundance of the ecosystem and raise the quality of life in terms of economy and society of the community in Chumphon. The result of this activity can be further developed in other areas sustainably.

EGAT Deputy Governor – Strategy said that EGAT brought the youth from the activity “Train Trip to Plant Trees” via ECOLIFE application to plant 4,000 mangrove trees in an area of 7 rai in Chumphon Province together with Chumphon youth and people. The activity aimed to implant the awareness on forest conservation in young people’s hearts, revive the dilapidated fish farms, and create a natural barrier against coastal erosion and waves. Moreover, the mangrove forest would be an important spawning ground and shelter for aquatic life and a source of food and income for the community.
Under the Participatory Reforestation Project, EGAT plans to reforest an area of one million rai nationwide within 10 years (2022-2031) and continuously take care of the forest for 9 years afterward. The project is carried out with the participation of communities and networks to plant and nurture trees and monitor the survival rate, coupled with applying technologies such as satellite system, drone, and IA to follow up on the growth of the trees, covering conservation, community, economic, and mangrove forests. The project will help absorb carbon dioxide of 1.2 million tons per year or around 24 million tons for the whole duration of the project, in line with the policy of EGAT Carbon Neutrality within 2050. In addition, EGAT would like to invite nature lovers to plant virtual trees with EGAT via “ECOLIFE” application to move towards carbon neutrality together.
