Sirindhorn Dam

Background

Sirindhorn Dam is an important multipurpose dam of the Northeastern part of the country. In addition to electricity generation, the dam gives several benefits for the wellbeing of the local people including irrigation, flood alleviation, fishery and tourism. The dam construction is regarded as a way of utilizing local resources for the maximum benefit which is consistent with the country development at the present time.

Sirindhorn dam or formerly known as “Lum Dome Noi Dam” is built across Lum Dome Noi river, a tributary of Mun River, at the area of Kaeng Sae Noi, Chong Mek Sub-district, Phibun Mangsahan District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The construction began in June 1968 and was completed in 1971.

On 2 February 1969, His Majesty King Bhumibol performed the foundation stone laying ceremony of the dam and gave permission to name the dam “Sirindhorn Dam” after Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. On 27 November 1971, the opening ceremony of the dam was performed by His Majesty King Bhumibol.               

At present, Sirindhorn Dam has installed the Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid which is the largest of the world, in its reservoir.
