Sirindhorn Dam

Background

Sirindhorn Dam is an important multipurpose dam of the Northeastern. In addition to electricity generation, the dam gives several benefits for the well-being of the people in the region including irrigation, flood mitigation, fisheries and tourism. The dam construction is a way of utilizing local resources to the maximum benefit.
Formerly called “Lum Dome Noi Dam,” Sirindhorn Dam is constructed across Lum Dome Noi, a tributary of Mun River, in the area of Kaeng Sae Noi, Chong Meck Sub-district, Phibun Mangsahan District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The construction started in June 1968 and was completed in 1971.
On February 2, 1969, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great performed the foundation stone laying ceremony of the dam and gave permission to name the dam “Sirindhorn Dam” after Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. On November 27, 1971, the opening ceremony of the dam was performed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great.
