North Bangkok Power Plant

Background

North Bangkok Power Plant is the first modern combined cycle power plant of Thailand. Its history dates back to the founding of EGAT. In the early years of the construction of Bhumibol Dam or Yanhee Dam, Yanhee Electricity Authority was founded to be responsible for the construction and management of the dam.

While Yanhee Dam was in the process of construction, Yanhee Electricity Authority constructed a steam power plant, North Bangkok Power Plant, in 1959 as the first power plant of Yanhee Electricity Authority. North Bangkok Power Plant which was officially opened on May 17, 1961 is regarded as “the master power plant” and the beginning of the modern electricity system in Thailand. The power plant had served the Thai society for 40 years before it was decommissioned and removed. The new power plant was constructed at the original site.

The new North Bangkok Power Plant is a combined cycle power plant using natural gas from Myanmar field (Western side) and the Gulf of Thailand (Eastern side) as fuel. The construction started in December 2006. The power plant was officially opened in September 2010. According to the Power Development Plan 2004-2015 and with the approval of the Cabinet on July 10, 2012, the second block was constructed to cope with the rising demand for electricity. The power plant has started to operate commercially on January 15, 2016.
