Combined cycle power plant
Natural gas
1,498 MW
The first modern combined cycle power plant of Thailand

Background

An important mission of the Thai government after World War II was the urgent development and restoration of the country. Electricity is one of the main factor to mobilize economic recovery rapidly.

Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) was assigned by the government to construct North Bangkok Power Plant of 75 MW in 1959. The construction was completed in 1962. Situated on the bank of the Chao Phraya River northward of Bangkok, the power plant can support the demand for electricity in Bangkok and suburban areas sufficiently.

North Bangkok Power Plant is regarded as “the Master Plant” which was the beginning of modern power development at that time. After 40 years of its operation, 2 new Units of North Bangkok Power Plant were planned to construct in the original site comprising Unit 1 in 2010 and Unit 2 in 2016 respectively using natural gas from Myanmar as fuel.

The advantage of North Bangkok Power Plant is its good location being situated near the center of electricity demand which helps save the investment of constructing transmission system, reduce the power loss in distribution system and the problem of power outage or blackout. Moreover, the power plant is designed to be harmonized with city environment creating a nice scenery of the power plant and the Chao Phraya River.

Characteristics of the power plant

North Bangkok Power plant is a combined cycle power plant having contractual generating capacity of 1,498 MW comprising

  • Block 1 with generating capacity of 670 MW
  • Block 2 with generating capacity of 828 MW
