EGAT showcases smart energy solutions for smart city and receives Smart Environment excellence award from Mae Moh Livable City Project at Thailand Smart City Expo 2023

24 November 2023

Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), represented by Mr. Suttipong Chalermkiat, Assistant Governor – Generation 2, received Smart Environment excellence award from Mae Moh Livable City Project, bestowed by Mr. Prasert Jantararuangtong, Minister of Digital Economy and Society. EGAT Assistant Governor – Generation 2 also attended the opening ceremony of Thailand Smart City Expo 2023, held by Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA), over which Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, presided. On this occasion, EGAT has showcased smart energy solutions highlighting city development under the concept “Smart City,” raising the quality of life by applying innovations and technologies, during November 22-24, 2023, at Hall 3-4, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

EGAT Assistant Governor – Generation 2, said that EGAT has carried out implementations in response to the “National Energy Plan,” moving toward Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and kept abreast of technology transition. Besides, EGAT has ensured the energy security in line with the 4D1E strategy of the Ministry of Energy which are Decarbonization: reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, Digitalization: applying digital technologies for energy management, Decentralization: decentralizing energy sources and infrastructure, Deregulation: improving regulations to support new energy policies, and Electrification: transforming energy usage to electric power usage, coupled with developing cities for the energy transition through several projects.

EGAT is supporting the transition through development of innovations and various options to facilitate the rapid and easy transition of cities toward becoming smart cities. This includes various smart energy solutions for energy management to meet the needs of urban developers and residents. It also focuses on using renewable energy, creating energy that aligns with innovative energy management technologies, and adapting designs to reduce energy costs in response to evolving technologies. These solutions include Renewable Energy Exchange (REX), a platform supporting the access to green energy, and ENZY, a management system for accessing electricity usage data within buildings with electricity usage prediction. For example, the Smart Campus at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University is now implementing these solutions including EleX by EGAT charging station, EleXA application, and BackEN EV charging station management platform for those interested in investing in EV charging stations. These initiatives contribute to the city’s progression toward a green society.

In addition, EGAT is also developing Mae Moh Smart City project, a prototype Smart City at the local level in Mae Moh District, Lampang Province, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and create a sustainable balance across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, enabling the sustainable living of the community. The project received the Smart Environment award at the Smart City Solutions Awards 2023, as it converts agricultural residues into biomass pellets to be used as fuel with coal at Mae Moh Power Plant to solve air pollution and fine particulate matter resulting from the burning of agricultural areas, reduce coal usage, and generate income through the sale of agricultural residues.

Furthermore, EGAT has successfully implemented Mae Hong Son Smart Grid project connecting 115 kV power transmission system with all power sources in the province to effectively solve power outages and fluctuations in Mae Hong Son Province.
